2018 Adult Sci-Fi & Fantasy Cover Reveals

I have some non-YA cover reveals for today’s post. I also have some thoughts on these covers, both good and bad. Oh, some of these aren’t recent reveals, but I recently discovered them, so I thought I’d share.

Dark Age
(Red Rising #5)
Publication Date: September 11, 2018
Hardcover, 480 pages, Del Rey Books
Genres: Adult, Sci-Fi

Description is for IRON GOLD.

They call him father, liberator, warlord, Reaper. But he feels a boy as he falls toward the pale blue planet, his armor red, his army vast, his heart heavy. It is the tenth year of war and the thirty-second of his life.

A decade ago, Darrow was the hero of the revolution he believed would break the chains of the Society. But the Rising has shattered everything: Instead of peace and freedom, it has brought endless war. Now he must risk everything he has fought for on one last desperate mission. Darrow still believes he can save everyone, but can he save himself?

And throughout the worlds, other destinies entwine with Darrow’s to change his fate forever:

A young Red girl flees tragedy in her refugee camp and achieves for herself a new life she could never have imagined.

An ex-soldier broken by grief is forced to steal the most valuable thing in the galaxy—or pay with his life.

And Lysander au Lune, the heir in exile to the sovereign, wanders the stars with his mentor, Cassius, haunted by the loss of the world that Darrow transformed, and dreaming of what will rise from its ashes.

Red Rising was the story of the end of one universe, and Iron Gold is the story of the creation of a new one. Witness the beginning of a stunning new saga of tragedy and triumph from masterly New York Times bestselling author Pierce Brown.

My Thoughts

Okay, so I’m not feeling this cover. It just looks so shiny compared to Iron Gold’s cover. I’m hoping it won’t be when the actual physical copies are printed, but who knows…?

Archangel’s Prophecy
(Guild Hunter #11)
Publication Date: October 13, 2018
Mass Market, 363 pages, Berkley
Genres: Adult, Romance, Urban Fantasy

Return to New York Times bestselling author Nalini Singh’s darkly passionate Guild Hunter world, where human-turned-angel Elena Deveraux, consort to Archangel Raphael, is thrust center stage into an eons-old prophecy....

Midnight and dawn, Elena’s wings are unique among angelkind…and now they’re failing. The first mortal to be turned into an immortal in angelic memory, she’s regressing. Becoming more and more human. Easier to hurt. Easier to kill.

Elena and Raphael must unearth the reason for the regression before it’s too late and Elena falls out of the sky. Yet even as they fight a furious battle for Elena’s very survival, violent forces are gathering in New York and across the world.

In China, the Archangel Favashi is showing the first signs of madness. In New York, a mysterious sinkhole filled with lava swallows a man whole. In Africa, torrential monsoon rains flood rolling deserts. And in Elena’s mind whispers a haunting voice that isn’t her own.

This time, survival may not be possible…not even for the consort of an archangel.

My Thoughts

I’ve only read the first book in this series, but I love this cover. It’s so bada$$. I really need to catch up on this series. Purple is my favorite color, and this one has a lot of purple.

Kill the Queen
(Crown of Shards #1)
Publication Date: October 2, 2018
Hardcover, 480 pages, Harper Voyager
Genres: Adult, Fantasy

Gladiator meets Game of Thrones: a royal woman becomes a skilled warrior to destroy her murderous cousin, avenge her family, and save her kingdom in this first entry in a dazzling fantasy epic from the New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of the Elemental Assassin series—an enthralling tale that combines magic, murder, intrigue, adventure, and a hint of romance.

In a realm where one’s magical power determines one’s worth, Lady Everleigh’s lack of obvious ability relegates her to the shadows of the royal court of Bellona, a kingdom steeped in gladiator tradition. Seventeenth in line for the throne, Evie is nothing more than a ceremonial fixture, overlooked and mostly forgotten.

But dark forces are at work inside the palace. When her cousin Vasilia, the crown princess, assassinates her mother the queen and takes the throne by force, Evie is also attacked, along with the rest of the royal family. Luckily for Evie, her secret immunity to magic helps her escape the massacre.

Forced into hiding to survive, she falls in with a gladiator troupe. Though they use their talents to entertain and amuse the masses, the gladiators are actually highly trained warriors skilled in the art of war, especially Lucas Sullivan, a powerful magier with secrets of his own. Uncertain of her future—or if she even has one—Evie begins training with the troupe until she can decide her next move.

But as the bloodthirsty Vasilia exerts her power, pushing Bellona to the brink of war, Evie’s fate becomes clear: she must become a fearsome gladiator herself . . . and kill the queen.

My Thoughts

I am loving this cover. That model with the red and the crown and the castle with the white background. It’s so awesome! The only nitpick I have is the title font. It’s not as bold as I would like, but it’s a very small issue. This is probably my favorite cover in this post.

Wild Hunger
(Heirs of Chicagoland #1)
Publication Date: August 14, 2018
Paperback, 352 pages, Berkley
Genres: Adult, Urban Fantasy

In the first thrilling installment of Chloe Neill's spinoff to the New York Times bestselling Chicagoland Vampires series, a new vampire will find out just how deep blood ties run.

As the only vampire child ever born, some believed Elisa Sullivan had all the luck. But the magic that helped bring her into the world left her with a dark secret. Shifter Connor Keene, the only son of North American Central Pack Apex Gabriel Keene, is the only one she trusts with it. But she's a vampire and the daughter of a Master and a Sentinel, and he's prince of the Pack and its future king.

When the assassination of a diplomat brings old feuds to the fore again, Elisa and Connor must choose between love and family, between honor and obligation, before Chicago disappears forever.

My Thoughts

Haven’t read the prequel series, but the synopsis for this one—which is kind of spoilery—sounds really good. Plus, that cover is gorgeous. The model is fierce, and the blue is beautiful. Now, I just have to find out if I can read this one without having read the previous books…

King of Scars
(Nikolai Duology #1)
Publication Date: January 28, 2019
Hardcover, 480 pages, Imprint
Genres: YA, Fantasy

Nikolai Lantsov has always had a gift for the impossible. No one knows what he endured in his country’s bloody civil war—and he intends to keep it that way. Now, as enemies gather at his weakened borders, the young king must find a way to refill Ravka’s coffers, forge new alliances, and stop a rising threat to the once-great Grisha Army.

Yet with every day a dark magic within him grows stronger, threatening to destroy all he has built. With the help of a young monk and a legendary Grisha Squaller, Nikolai will journey to the places in Ravka where the deepest magic survives to vanquish the terrible legacy inside him. He will risk everything to save his country and himself. But some secrets aren’t meant to stay buried—and some wounds aren’t meant to heal.

My Thoughts

I’m not sure about this cover. It’s pretty, but it’s very gold. I do like it way more than the Six of Crows covers, though. Those were not my style, neither were the Grisha books’ covers.

Oh, and yes, this cover reveal isn’t adult. I just realized before I scheduled the post that I forgot to put this one in and I didn’t feel like changing the title/theme of the post. #sorrynotsorry
