My Thoughts on The Crimes of Grindelwald Trailer

I thought I’d share my thoughts and feels about the newly released Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald trailer. In case you haven’t seen it, I’ve posted it below:

Oh gosh. I waited four days to watch this trailer, just because I thought I’d be disappointed. And, while there are some disappointing elements, I’m still super pumped about this film.

I guess I’ll start this off with the negative stuff. One, as most people have pointed out already, you can't apparate onto Hogwarts’ grounds, so that’s really weird. Two, Johnny Depp is undeserving of the Harry Potter franchise and should have been replaced immediately. And three, there will be no mention of Dumbledore’s sexuality or relationship with Grindelwald in this movie, and that’s just sad.

Okay. So, other than those three things, this trailer was everything I didn’t know I wanted in the Fantastic Beasts sequel. To be honest, I thought FB was just okay. It didn’t particularly wow me or have that nostalgic quality that the original HP films do. However, this trailer did manage to give me some of that nostalgia. Maybe it’s because Hogwarts and Dumbledore are actually in this one? And they used the original HP music?

Speaking of Dumbledore, it’s weird seeing him in regular-people clothes. Shouldn’t he be in robes? I’m a little confused about the costume design in this one. Why would Dumbledore be wearing a suit when in every headmaster picture in Hogwarts the witch or wizard has robes on? It’s not a super huge thing, but it’s a little baffling to me.

Anywho, I don’t know where the plot for this particular film is going, so it’ll be exciting to see what adventures Newt and co. get into this time around. I’m also interested in seeing Newt and his brother’s family drama play out.

All in all, this film is going to have its rough patches, but I’m definitely going to be watching it. It actually releases two weeks after I’ll be seeing Cursed Child on Broadway. So, yay for a month of awesome Harry Potter times!

Oh, and just a warning, be prepared for a lot of trailer thoughts over the next week. There have been some big ones that have just been revealed, and I want to talk about them all!

All but one of these books are library copies. I put the library books on hold, not expecting Tower of Dawn to get to me so quickly, since I only put them on hold about two weeks ago. Yet, somehow, it showed up. As for Morning Star, I had that thing put on hold last week after I was three-fourths of the way through Golden Son. My review of Golden Son has been posted, and I'm currently reading book three.

Lady Midnight was a gift from my roommate. It’s the international edition that she picked up from work. (She works at Simon & Schuster. Lucky duck.

Okay, so there’s one more amazing book I need to show you, but it involves a little backstory first.

I think a lot of people who follow my blog already know that I recently moved to NYC to pursue a career in book publishing. Well, I don't have a full-time, permanent job, but I am temping at a publishing house. I’ll let you guess which based on this pic:

It’s the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets! AHHHHHHH!!!!

One of my co-workers gave it to me. She said she couldn’t ship it out because it had a small tear on the dustjacket. Normally, I would care about such things, but those illustrated editions are expensive, so that tear will be quite alright until I can get my hands on some good glue.

As for the other books, I got Seeker at my local used bookstore via trade credit, and The Darkest Torment was a library copy. (I’ve read this one, and I’ll have my review up soon-ish.) I just didn’t want the hardcover copy because it wouldn’t match my paperbacks, so I’m waiting for the MMP before actually adding TDT to my Gena Showalter collection.

My Review

What in the world can I even say? This is the EIGHTH HARRY POTTER BOOK! We never in a million years thought we would get this, but we did! And now it’s over, and I read it too fast, and I don’t know what to do with my life. *sobs*

I’m not sure how coherent this review will be. I really just wanted to share my thoughts so I can see them later. I never wrote reviews for the original Harry Potter books when I read them (in a galaxy far, far away, many years ago), and I wish I had something to show me what I thought at the time. So, here we go…

First off, it was absolutely amazing to be back in the Wizarding World! So much love for the characters! I even enjoyed the new additions—Albus, James, Scorpius, and Rose. Unfortunately, we didn’t see much of the other offspring; however, getting to see Harry, Ron, and Hermione all grown up and parenting was so weird! I strangely just wanted more of their day-to-day routines, simply to see what their lives are like.

As for the real plot of this play script, it was definitely different from the Harry Potter books. It had a lighter tone (of course, that could be because of the form it’s written in), and the characters are struggling with issues that are (sort of) separate from the ones Harry went through. Albus and Scorpius’s misfit-itus is ridiculously relevant to every one of us, and Harry and Draco’s inability to connect to their kids is very relatable. I do wish Harry hadn’t said certain things though. It made me very upset and sad for poor Albus. On the complete opposite spectrum, Scorpius is just an adorable, magnificent character, don’t you agree?

Because of all this lack of communication and feeling-sharing, Albus and Scorpius make some poor choices. (I’m really trying not to spoil things here, can you tell?) These choices lead to a very strange and disturbing revelation that I’m not quite sure how to feel about. I didn’t expect Rowling to go where she did with Voldemort’s you-know-what, but once it was mentioned, I immediately knew what the you-know-what was. However, I had fun getting to the end and watching characters connect once again.

All in all, I think seeing the play live would be 10 times better than reading it alone in my room in the wee hours of the morn, but I still very much enjoyed every second of this fantastic addition to the Harry Potter world. And, while I know Rowling said there will be no more, I’m crossing my fingers and making wishes on stars that another book will be released in the future.

Harry Potter Midnight Barnes & Noble Release Party Recap

Yes! I’m back! After almost an entire month away from blogging, I have returned. If you follow me on social media, you probably know why I was taking my blogging break, but if you don’t, I’ll share my July whine-fest with you.

I was gone because I just didn’t have time to blog. I was 1) moving apartments, 2) finishing an internship course that required a portfolio, 3) working as a graduate assistant and editing a journal, and 4) not reading a whole heck of a lot.

Okay, so now that that’s over with, let’s get to the fun stuff. It’s time for me to recap my Harry Potter and the Cursed Child experience at the Barnes and Noble Midnight Release Party!

As I’m sure many of you know, J.K. Rowling and co. decided to grace us with an addition to the HP world, and yes, I’ve already read and devoured it. (My review will be up sometime this week.) Because I consider myself to be a dedicated fan—not that those who didn’t attend release parties are not—I dragged my friend along to this four-hour event. Thus, we begin the recap.

Okay, so walking through the door of BN is a magical experience all on its own. There’s books, more books, snacks, and BOOKS. However, with the Harry Potter décor floating around and the various wizards, witches, and creatures making their way across the floor, BN became a pseudo Hogwarts.

Thankfully, I got there early enough to score a red (Gryffindor) ticket for the eventual line. I don’t think the papers got all the way through the houses, though. No green (Slytherin) ticket was seen by my eyes.

After picking up a ticket, my friend and I simply browsed the shelves, which wasn’t necessarily a good thing for me since I had just spent too much mullah on home furnishings and groceries. Surprisingly, I restrained myself, though, and I didn’t purchase a book. I did buy a Golden Snitch though. (Don’t judge me, I had a 20% off coupon, and I wanted a souvenir of this particular HP experience.)

There were a few different events going on over the 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. time period, most of which catered to children. There was a decent HP trivia game, but so many littler kids were in attendance that it just kind of wasn’t as fun as it could have been. 

Besides the trivia, there was a fortunate teller (which used a method similar to MASH), wand-making (construction paper and string), a coloring/crossword puzzles station, and face painting. Needless to say, my 22-year-old friend and I did not find any event particularly thrilling.

I like that my local BN put on this event, but I feel like some consideration should have been taken into account for the generation that actually grew up with HP and would come to the release. Plus, I’ve seen some other cities’ BN HP events, and they just seemed way more sophisticated. Oh well…

Because the events weren’t for us, I mostly helped the friend find books to read. She ended up buying Red Queen and Fiery Heart. Red Queen was because of my recommendation, while Fiery Heart was because she thought she didn’t have that particular Richelle Mead book yet. It turns out that she did. Oops. Oh, and she didn’t buy a copy of HPatCC. Mostly because of its price and the fact that she doesn’t own copies of the other books.

Honestly, I had more fun recommending books to my friend than I did at the event itself. I also liked being in a bookstore full of new releases. I try to limit myself to stepping into a place where I can spend too much money on something that costs half as much online.

We also bought some food from the coffee shop inside BN. Unfortunately, they were out of ingredients to make the Butterbeer drink, and they also didn’t have any special HP snacks. Boo… I was hoping for some Pumpkin Pasties or candy snitches. I ended up getting a plain ol’ chocolate chip cookie.

The last part of the night involved the line. Of course, it was hot and miserable, but it was made even more so by a particularly loud screaming girl behind me. Because it didn’t take more than 15 minutes to get the lines situated, the trivia moderator thought it would be a good idea to ask questions while we stood in line. Okay, that’s fine, but some people were just obnoxiously loud. The girl behind me actually blew my eardrum out at one point. Gah. Annoying people suck.

All in all, I’m happy I went to the event, just because I want to remember the time that the eighth HP book/play released. I’m a little disappointed in the BN party, simply because I was expecting more, but it’s okay. I got a new Harry Potter book out of it, so we’re all good.

Now, let’s just hope there’s another HP midnight release somewhere in the near future. Come on, J.K., you know you can’t stop now. We need more.

I’ve been lusting after the HP Illustrated book for a looooooong time. Now I finally have it. Of course, the next one will be out soon, so I just have to get another edition. That’s around Christmas time though, so perhaps my mother will buy it for me. ;)

As for the other two, I watched the Epic Reads Explains video for Ruined, and I immediately knew I needed it. A mix of Red Queen and The Selection? Heck yes. And Frozen Tides is one I’ve been putting off getting because books five and six are so far away! However, I just can’t wait to read it anymore.

My Thoughts on the "Severus Snape and the Marauders" Short Film

Have you all seen this yet? And by this, I mean the fan-made Harry Potter prequel short film. It’s fabulous! I found it via Teen Vogue’s article, but Justin Zagri was the one who created a story about J.K. Rowling’s famous Marauders and Severus Snape and brought it to life on screen. 

I, personally, am not sure how accurate the story is based off of Rowling’s character backgrounds, but I think it fits very well into the overall storyline. Just watch and you’ll see:

Does this not make you want a prequel series? I think I’m foaming at the mouth for one right now.

While I don’t necessarily picture all of the characters as the way they were portrayed, all of the actors had me in absolute awe. The actors who played Sirius, Peter, and Remus, to me, did a fantastic job of delving into their characters. Sirius was a carefree jokester. Remus was the logical one—some of the time. And Peter was a scared little weasel, err… Excuse me… rat.

However, while I enjoyed the depictions of Severus, Lily, and James, their actors just didn’t quite mesh with my interpretations of the characters. I felt like James came off as a little too aggressive. I know James was a bully, but that fight was very rough. Oh and also, the special effects for the fight were really good. Peter’s casts had me cracking up! But back to the characters. None of the actors were bad, some just didn’t match my vision of the characters, either the visions I’ve made through reading the Harry Potter books or the visions I’ve come up with from what I’ve seen depicted in the films. While I am nitpicking, I promise, these minor flaws—and when I say minor I mean microscopic—do not detract from the epic-ness that is this film.

All in all, this is an amazing display of the power of Harry Potter fans. We’ll never get tired of seeing the Wizarding World come to life, and I think, since we can’t always get a new book or movie (although we are getting one of each of those very soon *squees loudly*), fans are the best way to keep the world alive. I would not be disappointed at all if another video like this made its way into the world. Actually, I’m kind of hoping for it because this thing was, in the words of Ronald Weasley, "bloody brilliant!"

The craft I want to share today was posted by Gretchen over at Boxy Colonial. I’ve actually already done this particular craft at my Harry Potter party, which you can check out here. My roommate actually used these directions for us to make our very own wands, just like these:

This is a great craft for book clubs or just a night of hanging out. Besides owning a glue gun, all you need is brown colored paints and some of those weird sticks from the craft section of Walmart.

Mine from the party turned out a little more dark and loopy than I originally intended, but I like it. It makes great bookish décor. Of course, the Hermione wand I bought from Ollivander’s is cooler, but this one is MINE. Check it out:

The craft I want to share today was posted by Kate over at Nearly Crafty. I think all of us booklovers not-so-secretly also want to own the biggest supply of bookmarks known to man. (Every book should have its own bookmark, am I right?) So here’s another way to make your own cute bookmarks:

I don’t normally have kids, so I wouldn’t be using toddlers as my image. I was thinking of using a Jensen Ackles/Dean Winchester image, or maybe even a Toothless or Harry Potter image if I can find the right one.

I get colored printing at my school, so it wouldn’t be hard to print the images, paste them onto cardstock, punch a piece of string through, and voilà!

If you can think of any other cool images that could be used, or that you want to use, definitely let me know!

Movie Trailer Thoughts: Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them

I thought I’d share my thoughts and feels about the new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them trailer. I know that I’m super late to this party, but I realized I hadn’t shared my thoughts yet, and I just couldn’t have that.

In case you haven’t seen the trailer ("Where have you been?" Teehee. I wrote that in Molly Weasley’s voice, did you hear her say it when you read the sentence?), I’ve posted it below:

First off, I have to say that the first time I saw this trailer, I, of course, loved it, but the second time I saw it, as it was previewing before Star Wars: The Force Awakens, I teared up. I guess seeing it on the big screen had me feeling all of the feels. Plus, that line “J.K. Rowling invites you to return to the Wizarding World” has me all nostalgic. I miss Harry so much! I even shushed my mom the other night, just because Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 was on television. And her response was “Haven’t you seen this multiple times already?” Yes, but that doesn’t matter.

Okay, back to the trailer. There’s actually not a lot going on with this trailer. It’s mostly just the Lumos Maxima scene, and the characters in the courtroom, then the two main characters looking at the case, and then the end title scene. Not a whole lot going on, right? But it’s still got me ready to buy a ticket.

I haven’t read the book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them yet. I’ve looked through it and I know it’s more of an encyclopedia of creatures than an adventure story, so I can’t wait to see how the film plays out. I’ll be reading the book closer to the movie’s release date, just so I can know what’s happening.

Also, I love how we’re getting a look into the American Wizarding World for this film (I refuse to acknowledge that American non-wizards aren’t called muggles, though). And while I like the setting of the story, I think it would have been really amazing to see a modern-day America with wizards. Am I right? But I’m just happy we’re getting more wizardry, so I can’t complain too much.

Now, I’ve never seen Eddie Redmayne in anything, but I know he’s been said to be an amazing actor, so I can’t wait to see him play Newt Scamander. Other than his character, I’m not sure who the other actors and actresses are playing and I don’t want to completely spoil myself for the book (if there’s any crossover), so I’m not going to delve too far into who they are just yet.

All in all, I think it’s obvious that any Harry Potter fan is going to be seeing this movie. Actually, I’m fairly certain true Harry Potter fans would see this movie even if it was illegal. I know I would break the law just so I can be a wizard one more time.

The craft I want to share today was listed on Teen.com and was actually created by a lot of different creative people. These are some awesome graduation caps that I really want to try to make. As you can see in the picture below: 

I’m graduating in five months and I think it would be really cool to decorate my cap with something fandom-related. That’s the only way I would do it, simply because I like puns and witty comments. I tried the pretty graduation cap decoration in high school and I ended up not liking it, so funny stuff it is.

If you can think of any other cool graduation cap ideas I should mull over using, you should let me know.

I know some people think decorating your college graduation cap is lame, but if I figure out the right idea, I’m going to do it.
