The 2026 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

The halfway mark is here. 2026 is going by fast. While this year had its ups and downs, I'm still sad to see it go. I do think the fall season holds better things for me, though. Like hope, cooler weather, a few new releases coming out that I'm anticipating, and a couple of other good things that I can't think of on the spot but that I know just make autumn the better time of year overall. But anyway, the year being halfway over also means it’s time for the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.

This tag was created years ago by someone in the book community to basically wrap up the first half of a person's reading year. I’ve actually had a great reading year so far, as of June 20, when I'm writing this post. I've reached my 2026 reading goal. I'm hoping I can double my numbers by the end of the year, however, I'm not changing my Reading Challenge goal on Goodreads. I don't want the pressure.

As of June 20, I’ve read 48 books! That's 14 more than last year's Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag. And, I'm thinking I might be able to read two more before the end of the month, getting me on track to reading 50 in the first half of 2026. That will make reading 50 in the latter half of the year entirely possible, which means I could reach 100 books for the first time since college. Wow!

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2026

This was a tough question to answer. While I've read some really great books, I'm on the fence of whether or not I've found one to obsess over like I usually do around this time each year. BUT, I will say, the book I chose, Captive Traitor King by Brigid Kemmerer, is fantastic! It's the sequel to Warrior Princess Assassin, and it has a polyamorous MMF relationship between an assassin, a king, and a princess. I found the second installment to be just as addicting as the first. I'm sad that I have to wait for book three, especially since I read a NetGalley copy and now I have to wait even longer.

 

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR

Well, funnily enough, the answer to this question is very similar to last year's. I had the Beasts of the Briar series by Elizabeth Helen listed. Since the books are now releasing at a slower pace, I just have one book to share this time. Frozen by Stardust is the fifth book in the series, and I am super excited for books six and seven, which are releasing super soon. I think book six comes out in July.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO

I think I've read most of the new releases that are top on my priorities list. There are a few that aren't quite at the top that got pushed to the side, though. Half City by Kate Golden is a book I've heard fantastic things about, and I own a gorgeous edition (featured below). It's been compared to Buffy and Supernatural, which sounds amazing! Some others I need to get to include This Kingdom Will Not Kill Me by Ilona Andrews, Starside by Alex Aster, and The Crown of War and Shadow by J.R. Ward.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR

THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

The second half of 2026 is actually kind of meh compared to the first half. Yes, there are books I'm excited for, but now that I've read two of the ones I was really looking forward to, there isn't a lot that I'm foaming at the mouth to get my hands on. The only big ones are the next two books in the Beasts of the Briar series. Which, to be fair, I am very, very excited about. I'm also dreading the series coming to an end. It's sad to think about. The only other two books that are close to the level of excitement of these two include The Knave and the Moon by Rachel Gillig and Defy the Dusk by Danielle L. Jensen.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Now, this wasn't really a difficult answer at all, sadly. Sarah Glenn Marsh's Our Rogue Fates was blurbed by Sean Astin. Yeah, that's right, Samwise Gamgee. That's crazy! So, once I heard that, I really wanted to read it. Plus, the description sounded like a lot of fun. But, the book did not live up to my expectations. There were some really questionable decisions made by the main characters and the writing overall just wasn't for me.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas was my biggest disappointment in last year's Mid-Year Book Freakout, so you can imagine my surprise when I went into Bonds of Hercules trying to be cautiously optimistic even though I'd heard some things that alarmed me. However, when I finally got into this, it was great. It read super easy, the characters were fun, and I'm now actually anticipating the spinoff. I think lowering my expectations from the first book really helped. Plus, the hype for book one was a little overwhelming last year.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

It's kind of crazy that I haven't talked about Melissa K. Roehrich yet. I spent an entire four weeks binge-reading her books. Well, six of her books. I read the first two installments of the Legacy series, realized I needed to read the Lady of Darkness series so I wouldn't be spoiled, and then devoured all five of those plus a couple of novellas. I haven't yet gone back to finish the Legacy series. Not because I don't want to, but because I have found it difficult to pick up the ebook versions for some reason, so I'm trying to wait on my preordered special Aurora Crate editions to ship. We'll see how much longer I can hold off. Her books are definitely for fans of the larger, more epic romantasy worlds, like Throne of Glass, ACOTAR, From Blood and Ash, and Fourth Wing.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

This was a tough question. I have a few characters that come to mind, but I think Patroclus and Achilles from Jasmine Mas's Bonds of Hercules are a solid answer. They were the stars of the book, in my opinion. Now, if you'd asked me this after reading Blood of Hercules, I would've said heck no, but something changed in the sequel. I adored them. One of my other choices would have been Cain Hawthorne from Soul Sworn by Kate Dylan (out in November) and Callum from The Wolf King by Lauren Palphreyman. Honestly, The Wolf King would have been the answer to some of these tag questions, but I just know the author is going to pull a Tamlin-Rhysand situation, which I LOATHE, so I'm not getting my hopes up.

NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

I used the UK paperback edition of Warrior Princess Assassin for this answer, as there isn't a ton of fan art of this character. I'm also cheating a little bit since I read this book last year. However, I did read the the second book recently, so it counts, right? Anyway, Asher is my newest favorite character. I just feel so bad for the poor boy and want him to be snuggled in blankets with chocolate and kittens and puppies and all things good to make him happy. Is that too much to ask, Brigid Kemmerer? Ugh. Let him be happy! 

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

  I don't remember crying very much for any book I've read so far this year, but, there was one. Just one that I specifically remember crying during. And I hated that I was crying about it because the book made me very upset, and not in a good way. If you've read this, you'll know what I'm talking about. I have honestly never read something like this in a MFM duology. I never want to read something like it again. I also don't think I'll ever be able to trust this author ever again. Needless to say, I unhauled this duology. Waste of my time.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

I think the Game Changers series by Rachel Reid made a lot of people happy in December/January. I watched the show in December, but read the books in January and February. While I enjoyed the other five books, Heated Rivalry was my favorite. I still can't believe I hadn't read this book before the show aired. I had a huge MM hockey romance period back in 2024. I honestly think the first book, which is between a barista-esque guy and a hockey player, threw me off from reading the series. I don't like the baker/barista/bartender/anything-to-do-with-food-services trope in my romance books. It's a very niche turnoff. Lol.

FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION

YOU SAW THIS YEAR

I would have put Heated Rivalry on here, but technically, I watched that last year. The very last episode of the first season aired on Christmas day. I don't have an end-of-year freakout post, so it seems a shame not to mention it here. I will say, though, that Project Hail Mary was a good adaptation of Andy Weir's book. I had a couple of criticisms, but I could see myself rewatching this movie frequently. I already rewatch The Martian, Weir's other book, fairly often, so it wouldn't surprise me.

FAVORITE REVIEW YOU’VE WRITTEN THIS YEAR

I think my actual favorite review that I've written so far this year won't go live until November. (Spoilers: It's for Soul Sworn by Kate Dylan.) However, if we're just looking at the first six months of 2026, I'll go with Dhampira by Amy Pennza. This was a very fun, atmospheric, gothic vampire romantasy. I even decided to read Amy Pennza's backlist as well as her current release because I enjoyed it so much. So far, I've only read Dhampira and Wolfseeker, but I'll get to the others soon.

MOST BEAUTIFUL BOOK YOU’VE

RECEIVED SO FAR THIS YEAR

 There were three books that stood out to me for answering this question. The one pictured is the FairyLoot edition of Half City by Kate Golden, which is gorgeous! I'm usually not much of a red/black lover for my book designs, but something about this one just has me in a chokehold. And the endpaper art is beautiful as well! I still need to read it, but I've heard good things. The second book is also a FairyLoot edition. King of Ravens by Clare Sager is a beautiful book as well. And the third one is Charissa Weaks's blue author edition of The Witch Collector. It has character art on it and is so very pretty. I wasn't expecting it to be that pretty. I have photos in my previous Stacking the Shelves posts, if you're interesting in checking the covers out.

The 2025 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

The halfway mark is here. It's been a relatively quiet year so far. I think ApollyCon is the craziest thing that's happened to me other than the tornado that came through my town. Since I only had my power out for a few days, it didn't really affect me like it did some other people in my area. I think there are some fun things coming up in the later half of year, though, so I have that to look forward to. But anyway, the year being halfway over also means it’s time for the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.

This tag was created years ago by someone in the book community to basically wrap up the first half of a person's reading year. I’ve had a good reading year so far, as of June 12, when I'm writing this post. I've reached my 2025 reading goal. I'm hoping I can double my numbers by the end of the year, however, I'm not changing my reading goal. I don't want the pressure.

As of June 12, I’ve read 34 books. There is one series that I owe my reading speed to, as it really brought my love for reading back after about a year of significant slumpage. I'll talk about it in a bit, actually. I've also been reading more of my physical books than normal as well. I'm really enjoying that. I have this challenge where I'm trying to read a physical book for every physical book that I haul that I haven't read yet. It was going pretty well, until a bunch of FairyLoot sets showed up all at once. Ha ha. I'm going to try to read some shorter books soon so I can catch up though. I just need to get through some of my lengthy ARCs first.

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2025

This was a super easy answer, as, like I said earlier, there was one book that really got me to enjoy reading again, and it was this one: Bonded by Thorns by Elizabeth Helen. I don't know why but I just loved it. I think because it was easy and fun while still being a good fantasy story. It helps that I actually like the guy characters as well. Sometimes, the men in why-choose stories can be too all about serving their woman. These guys, however, have their own things going on. Plus, it's just a good time.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR

This question was easy to answer as well, just because I haven't read a ton of sequels this year. I've been prioritizing getting books off my TBR, which means reading some of those first books in series. But yeah, the second, third, and fourth books in the Beasts of the Briar series were great. While I think the story got more epic in scope, which hurt some of the character development and interactions a bit, there are apparently going to be three more books in the series, so I expect any limitations in character development won't really be a problem by that point. I'm glad I have this series after Zodiac Academy and its spinoffs concluded. It's really helped fill a void I didn't even know I had.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO

I don't have a set answer for this one. I just looked at my shelves and picked something that I got in the past five months. The Wind Weaver by Julie Johnson was the winner. I've heard great things about it from Booktubers I watch, so I'm hoping that means it's an amazing read. I have nothing more to really go on other than that.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR

THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

The second half of 2025 is going to be amazing! I have The Primal of Blood and Bone coming out on the same day that another anticipated release, What Fury Brings by Tricia Levanseller releases. I'm trying to get an ARC of What Fury Brings so I can read it before POBAB, as POBAB will take all of my attention and likely my sanity, but so far, it's been quiet. I'm also excited for Bitter Burn by Sierra Simone, the final book in the New Camelot trilogy.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Now this was a difficult question, as there were a couple of books that didn't quite meet the mark for me, but I wouldn't say I was disappointed by them, since I knew going in they had lower reviews or weren't really my thing. But Blood of Hercules by Jasmine Mas kind of hurt me a bit. I'd heard amazing things about this book, but I read it, and while it wasn't bad, it was just odd. I still plan to continue with the series, but I think it could have been soooooo much better..

BIGGEST SURPRISE

I requested The Raven Scholar for review from Orbit, not knowing it was an epic fantasy with little romance. Therefore, I was surprised that I enjoyed myself so much while reading. It took a couple of chapters to get into the story, but once I did, I'd keep wanting to flip the pages. I think this one reignited my love for fantasy, not just romantasy.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

Obviously, I had to put Elizabeth and Helen here, the individual names of the author duo Elizabeth Helen. Like I said, they were able to fill a void that only Zodiac Academy, Ruthless Boys, and Darkmore Penitentiary had been able to fill. I'm excited to read the last three books of the series. I am sad they won't release until 2026, though. It's gonna be a long wait.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

This was another tough question. I have a few characters that come to mind. One being Dayton from the Beasts of the Briar series (pictured above), as well as Farron and Kel from the Beasts of the Briar series. I also like Lorian from the Kingdom of Lies series by Stacia Stark, Levan from Silvercloak, Kayden Lockwood from Kiss the Villain, and Rory Myndacious from The Knight and the Moth.

NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

Farron from the Beasts of the Briar series wins this one. I just love me a sweet cinnamon roll character, and that is definitely what he is, though I'm a little worried about him for the future books. The gargoyle from The Knight and the Moth is also pretty high up there.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

 

  I don't think I cried very much this year. Or at least, I don't remember if I have, which means there was nothing that truly devastated me. So, I guess I'm going with The Bones Beneath My Skin by TJ Klune. I feel like TJ Klune has the unique ability to make me cry with every book he writes, so this isn't much of a surprise that I teared up for this one. Although, there wasn't any sobbing, just a couple of wet eyes every once in a while.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

This is a weird one to say made me happy, but I couldn't list the Beasts of the Briar books again, so I'm going with Kiss the Villain by Rina Kent, despite it being a dark, mafia romance book. I think this book helped get me back into reading just like the Beasts books did. It was fun and sexy at the same time. I actually went out and bought all of the books set in the same time range, just so I could follow more of the backstory of the characters I enjoy. I'm excited for the next one in this series to come out next year.

FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION

YOU SAW THIS YEAR

I haven't watched many book adaptations. The only one that really stands out to me is The Wheel of Time season three. However, I haven't ready the books, so my answer is based purely on the television show. While I know the show has many flaws, I still love the way they've set up the characters and how they're depicting the worldbuilding. I will say, Amazon is a little cheap when it comes to background actors, though. Sometimes you wonder why there aren't any people running around in the background of a busy town. It's definitely funny once you realize it. I'm super mad they decided to cancel this show, but I could definitely see it coming. Like I said, Amazon is too cheap since they spent all their money on Fourth Wing and Rings of Power.

FAVORITE REVIEW YOU’VE WRITTEN THIS YEAR

I've actually had some great reviews this year. The Raven Scholar is one of them, and my upcoming review of Silvercloak is another I think is really good. However, my favorite is my review of The Knight and the Moth. It was an atmospheric, but funny, book, so I think my review reflected that.

 I actually had a few books for this answer, but the one I went with is the Books for Days Crate version of A Shadow in the Ember by JLA. It's just so pretty. The artwork inside is amazing and the edges are gorgeous. Plus, I'm going to get a whole set for both series very soon. Yay! The Heavenly Bodies FairyLoot edition, the Arcane editions of FBAA, and the Wicked trilogy were also very close contenders.

The 2024 Mid-Year Book Freakout Tag

The halfway mark is almost here. Just a couple of weeks and we're officially mid-way through 2024. This year hasn't been as crazy as last year. I think the only major thing that happened in my life was volunteering at ApollyCon. I need to make some fun plans soon so this year isn't so boring. But I guess every year can't have me finding a new place to live, going to ApollyCon, and prepping for a trip to Iceland. But anyway, the year being halfway over also means it’s time for the Mid-Year Book Freak Out Tag.

This tag was created years ago by someone in the book community to basically wrap up the first half of a person's reading year. I’ve had a mediocre reading year so far. It's been very slumpy. I've read a small number of books. I'm hoping I can reach at least 50 by the end of 2024, but it's not the end of the world if I fall short. That's why I set my Goodreads goal so low at 30 books. I hate the pressure.

As of June 21, 2024, I’ve read 15 books and am halfway through my Goodreads Challenge. I’m not going to change my goal from 30 books, but, like I said, reaching 50 by the end of the year would be awesome. I'm finally getting out of a major slump, so I think I can do it. I also got rid of Kindle Unlimited, which was what caused some major slumpage. It's much harder to pick up a physical book than it is to pick up my phone. However, I've persevered, and now I actually like picking up the books on my physical TBR... some days.

BEST BOOK YOU’VE READ SO FAR IN 2024

This was a difficult question to answer, as it's been a mediocre reading year in both quantity and quality. While I've been reading a lot of 3-4 star books, they just aren't anything I'm obsessing over. I think Gold by Raven Kennedy is the closest I've come to having a favorite this year, but even it is iffy, as the first half of the book was so slow. The ending really got me though. Those cliffhangers are brutal. I think runners up for my favorite would be Iron Flame, A Fate Inked in Blood, and the first three books in The Tarot Sequence.

BEST SEQUEL YOU’VE READ SO FAR

This question was a lot easier to answer. I binge read the two sequels to The Last Sun by K.D. Edwards so fast. These are books two and three in The Tarot Sequence. I only read book one in April of this year, but I picked up The Hanged Man and The Hourglass Throne as soon as I got them in my hands. I'm devastated the next book isn't likely to release until 2026. How disappointing. Iron Flame was a good one too, but it took me a long time to even want to pick that one up, and it wasn't as digestible as these quick-read paranormal/urban fantasy books. Oh, and Zodiac Academy: Restless Stars, the final book in the series, was good as well. It just didn't leave a huge impact as the stakes didn't feel as high. Basically, I wanted more death like in previous installments.

NEW RELEASE YOU HAVEN’T READ YET, BUT WANT TO

I honestly don't know how to answer this question. A lot of the books that I really want to read were released in 2023, so I'm trying to think about what would work best. I also have a lot of sequels that released in 2024, but I have yet to read the first book, so I feel like that doesn't count either. I guess Dragon Rider by Taran Matharu is one I want to get to soon. I need to review it. Plus, I enjoyed his YA series.

MOST ANTICIPATED RELEASE FOR

THE SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR

Honestly, 2024 is a quiet year for releases for me, simply because there wasn't an FBAA book released, and the next one isn't coming out until 2025. Ugh. But, I do have two books I'm highly anticipating for the second half of 2024, even if they aren't FBAA. Goldfinch by Raven Kennedy comes out very soon. Only two more months to go. While Swordcrossed by Freya Marske releases in October. Boo... So far away.

BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT

Does this even count as a disappointment when I had a strong suspicion it wasn't going to be good after the second book was terrible? House of Flame and Shadow was awful. I think it butchered a lot of character development and the showdown at the end was lackluster. The only redemption for the story was a couple of the side characters and their arcs, but even those couldn't hold it together.

BIGGEST SURPRISE

Cat Sebastian's We Could Be So Good was actually... good. I enjoyed myself very much with this one. It's a historical MM romance set around news publishing in the '60s. I typically don't like historical stories if they don't have some sort of magical quality to them, but this was interesting and fun. I picked up the second book in the companion series, and it was good too.

FAVORITE NEW AUTHOR

I have only read three new authors this year, which is disappointing. But, it made this question really easy to answer. My newest favorite author is K.D. Edwards. While I can't guarantee I'll pick up everything he writes, since he has a ton of novellas out there, I think I'll definitely read his major works. Right now, he only has the one series that I know of, so I'm fairly safe from adding too many things to my TBR.

NEWEST FICTIONAL CRUSH

This was a tough one, but I went the safe route and chose Bjorn from A Fate Inked in Blood by Danielle L. Jensen. He's a little too standoffish at times, but I do like him overall. There truly weren't a ton of options from the books I've read. It's been a pretty quiet year in terms of finding fictional crushes. I believe this art was commissioned by the author.

NEWEST FAVORITE CHARACTER

Brand from The Tarot Sequence. This character has me back and forth sometimes. He reminds me a lot of Dean Winchester in that he's protective and a badass, but he doesn't get as much individuality and page time as I always hope for in these books. (Art by oblivionsdream)

BOOK THAT MADE YOU CRY

  I mean, is this is a surprise? Restless Stars is the final book in a nine-book series that I've been reading diligently over the past few years. Of course it was going to make me cry. I hate giving up these characters. I'm actually quite ticked that it's over. The only thing keeping me together is that the authors are releasing special editions with bonus content. I also still haven't read the sequel spinoff series (Darkmore Penitentiary and the new Never Keep one), so that'll help ease some of the pain too. Or it could make it worse, who knows.

BOOK THAT MADE YOU HAPPY

In that same vein, ZA 9, while leaving me sad that it's over, also had scenes that made me very happy. I love it when all the characters in the series are together. They're just so funny. The authors' writing style is so unique and witty. I'm excited to try their contemporary books and see how their writing style reflects in a real-world storyline.

FAVORITE BOOK ADAPTATION

YOU SAW THIS YEAR

I haven't watched many book adaptations. The TV adaptations I have watched include The Last Kingdom, which I haven't watched past the early episodes of season two; Anne with an E, which got really annoying in season three; and Bridgerton season three, which hasn't been my favorite of all the Bridgerton seasons. I also watched The Night Agent Netflix film, which I guess is an adaptation of a book; however, I've never read it. I haven't read any of these books, actually. So, this is a terrible question for me in the year 2024. Come back next year and maybe I'll have a better answer.

FAVORITE REVIEW YOU’VE WRITTEN THIS YEAR

I actually haven't written very many reviews in 2024, which doesn't come as a shock seeing as I haven't been reading as much. The one that I actually wrote and like the most is my review of Danielle L. Jensen's A Fate Inked in Blood. I think I liked it mostly because the book reminded me a lot of FBAA and Viking-esque shows, so it was a fun one to review. I'm excited about the sequel whenever it's supposed to release.

 Such an easy question to answer this year. Illumicrate did special editions of Rin Chupeco's Reaper series, and boy are these things gorgeous. I absolutely LOVE this duology, so I was beyond ecstatic when Illumicrate announced their editions. They're pretty and purple and red and they look amazing on my shelves. I'm considering purchasing their other Rin Chupeco set as well, but I just don't know if I want to fork over $100+ on a series I haven't read yet. Why can't Illumicrate get a U.S. distributor for their non-sub editions? Sigh.

These are the books I want to have completed or at least, in the case of some of the series like KOTW and Arcana, significantly made my way through. I'm also over halfway through ASoS and Charm, I just need to finish them. I also have a few others I'd like to get to, but the ones I've listed are more important in terms of how long they've been on my physical TBR and how much I want to read them.
