I randomly thought of this tag after someone mentioned they had an unpopular bookish opinion on YouTube... Or maybe it was something someone posted on Instagram? Or TikTok? I'm not 100% sure anymore. A popular book or series that you didn’t like
I actually DNF'ed this book. A Hades and Persephone retelling, and I DNF'ed it. Wow. But it's not just this book, I was also eh about Scarlett's King of Battle and Blood as well. It was mediocre. The characters were one-dimensional and the worldbuilding was underdeveloped. I may try Scarlett's future books to see if her writing has improved, as her ideas are good, it's just the execution that's iffy, but I'll definitely check those new books out from the library or read them on Kindle Unlimited. I won't buy them until I know I like them. It's too much of a financial risk.
A popular book or series that everyone else seems to
hate but you love
So I had Victoria Aveyard's Red Queen as my answer back in 2017, and it still applies. However, I read a trilogy in 2019 that I ADORE, and it seems like very few other people do, based on the Goodreads rating that is. This series has a great world and magic system. It's like a mix of the Daevabad series and The Wrath and the Dawn. But I think it was released before both of those.
A love triangle where the main character ended up with
the person you did not want them to end up with

Are love triangles even a thing anymore? I feel like I haven't read one in five years. The only relationship I can think of isn't between the main characters, and it's not technically a love triangle. It's a relationship that was teased in book two and then dropped with no warning in book three. Caldon and a certain brother should've been together. It was so disappointing to have the author set that possible relationship up and then drop it before it ever even got a chance in the next book. I don't mind the character Caldon ended up with, I just think the brother would've been better.
A popular book genre that you hardly reach for
It's not technically a genre, but I've found myself falling out of YA lately. I'm still getting one or two in a month, but adult is my bread and butter now. For actual genres, I guess contemporary is dwindling, especially YA contemporary. I don't like reading about high schoolers finding love. It holds zero appeal.
A popular or beloved character that you do not like
I have two: Warner
from Taherah Mafi’s Shatter Me series and Rhys from Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of
Thorns and Roses series.
Okay, so this answer actually didn't need an update. I still don't like either of these characters, and no one can change my mind. I don’t like
Warner because of his actions in the first two books in the series, and I
refuse to read the sequels just because other people think he's redeemed. I didn't want him to be redeemed. I didn't like him enough for him to be redeemed. Also, I hate it when authors randomly
switch the love interest in the middle of a series, when, for the majority of
the plot, the character has been with one person. I loathe getting invested in
one guy only to have to switch allegiances to another.
Speaking of
switching love interests, people get mad about Tamlin's actions, which admittedly weren't great in ACOMAF, but holy cow! The hypocrisy! Rhysand is just as bad, especially in ACOSF. As much as I was meh about him as I was reading ACOMAF and ACOWAR, I despised him in ACOSF. He was a total a$$hole.
A popular author that you can’t seem to get into
This one's pretty easy: V.E. Schwab. I read A Darker Shade of Magic, and it just seemed dry. I also read The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue and thought it was meh. I don't understand how her books are so popular. Though I am going to try to read A Darker Shade of Magic again one day, as one of the characters I often see fan art of isn't introduced until book two. I'm also older now, so I think I could appreciate a "drier" fantasy read at this point in my life. Lol.
A popular trope that you’re tired of seeing
I don't think there's a trope I'm sick of. I'm mostly just tired of people giving certain tropes the "reverse" label just because the sexes are flipped. Like if the man is the happy personality in a grumpy x sunshine trope, people label it "reverse grumpy x sunshine." Same for the age-gap romance. It's super irritating. It's just "grumpy x sunshine." There's no reverse involved.
A popular series that you have no interest in reading
I'm interested in reading this duology in theory, but in execution, absolutely never. Haunting Adeline has a male love interest that I'm intrigued by, but from what I've heard about book two, it's a big fat NOPE. While I don't mind dark storylines, I need more than just torture p*rn in my books. And maybe I'm judging the book too harshly, but I'll likely never know, since it's not something I'll ever pick up.
The saying goes “the book is always better than the movie”
but what movie or TV show adaptation do you prefer over the book?
This is rough. I think the books are better 99% of the time, but, even though I haven't read the books, there's no way the How to Train Your Dragon movies aren't better than the books. No way. Toothless is just too adorable in animation to be better on a piece of paper.

Well, I admit I do still enjoy Scarlett St. Clair. I wouldn't say everything is perfectly wonderful about them. I could honestly do without a sex scene or two per book, but they're fun. It's nice seeing the Persephone/Hades myth made into a less scary kidnapping/raping story. While I wouldn't say Rhys was my fave choice of ACOTAR I can say he grew on me, but yeah I was pissed at him for ACOSF. Tamlin was another surprise because I kind of liked the dude in the first book, but then after a handful of pages of ACOMAF I was done with him. Warner, eh. I wasn't fond of him either, but then I forgot what Adam did that started nagging at me near the end of book 2. I wasn't totally team Warner, but there comes a time when I just start to roll with whoever the heroine is "choosing" even if I don't like them. He did grown on me I will say that.
ReplyDeleteI skipped the comments on The Blood Traitor as I still need to read that series, so I can't express opinion on that! Lol! I never read Exquisite Captive, so again, no opinion. Toothless is adorable though! I still need to watch that third movie. I am SO behind on my movies...and other book series. How can I be behind on both, that's just not fair! Lol.
I avoided Haunting Adeline which recently popped up in some circles not too long ago. My sister even found it. That's too much hardcore porn for my liking when I can't even handle the amount of sex in some other romances I read! Lol. Scwhab is an author I go back and forth with. I read her Monsters of Verity and enjoyed that. Wasn't wowed with her A Darker Shade of Magic plot to even pick it up. I do want to read Gallant from last year as that one intrigued me. But yeah, she's hit or miss for me too. I read another of her older books but it was a miss, so I never finished the series...if there was more I can't even remember. Lol.
Rhys was the worst in ACOSF! He'd started growing on me in the ACOWAR and then all the ACOSF events went down and I loathed him. Very much.
