Dean Winchester Friday

Dean Winchester (or sometimes Jensen Ackles) Fridays make me a very happy fangirl. You'll see why when you look at the picture.

He’s too sexy for his shirt. For his car. For his non-existent cat. For pretty much this entire world. Agreed? Agreed.

*Note: I do not own this image. I found it on Google here

THE HEIR by Kiera Cass—Cover Reveal Video

I'm actually not a huge fan of this cover. It's not as elegant as the
previous books. This one kind of just looks like someone wanted to
throw glitter all over the place.

What are your thoughts?

Waiting on Wednesday: The Eternity Key by Bree Despain

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, what's really got my pages in a twist is...

The Eternity Key
(Into the Dark #2)
Publication Date: May 12, 2015
Hardcover, 448 pages, Egmost USA
Genres: Paranormal, Young Adult

After escaping the Skylords, Haden, Daphne, and their friends decide to try to find the Key of Hades on their own before Persephone's Gate opens again on the spring equinox. They think they can use the Key as leverage to stop the Court from coming after Daphne, and stop them from releasing the Keres on the mortal world. Once in Olympus Hills, Haden and Daphne find themselves with some hiccups in their plan. Haden's twin brother, Rowan, reveals himself to have been following Haden's entire mission, and the Skylords have sent a group of their own to enroll at Olympus Hills High to spy on Haden and Daphne.

As the spring equinox looms, the gang finds an unlikely ally in one of the Skylords who helps them devise a plan for getting the Key and using it to destroy the Keres before they can break free from the Pit and devour the world. In order to fulfill the plan, Daphne must enter the Underrealm with the Key. Unfortunately, because of the oath Haden made to never bring Daphne back there, he is unable to accompany Daphne. Reluctantly, he agrees to let Garrick and Tobin take her through Persephone's Gate, while he and the Skylord wait for them on the other side.

Separated in two different worlds, but still linked by destiny, Haden and Daphne must race against time to keep the Keres from revolting and keep themselves-and their love-alive.

My Thoughts

So I’m not too thrilled about the cover change. Don’t get me wrong, book one’s cover wasn’t all that wonderful to me, but this design isn’t either. At least the story was good. I’ll probably wait until this comes out in paperback to buy it though. That way my series will match.

What book are you waiting for this Wednesday?

Reading Books Out of Order: The Sea Breeze Series by Abbi Glines

So I have this problem. Well… It’s not exactly a problem per se, more of a minor dilemma and I just kind of wanted everyone’s thoughts on it.

I have to read and review some of the books in the Sea Breeze companion series by Abbi Glines.

http://www.pinterest.com/pin/419468152764841328/

I’m reviewing Sometimes It Lasts and Misbehaving, books #5 and #6 in the series.

I need to review them for The Book Review Board of Missouri, but I haven’t read the first 4 books in the series. I looked up information on the books and Glines said that they could be read out of order, except for Sometimes It Lasts, which follows two characters that have another previous story in the series.

If you’ve read these books, do you think I should just read them out of order or read the entire series? Please comment below.

Review: Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld

Afterworlds
Publication Date: September 2014
Hardcover, 599 pages, Simon & Schuster
Genres: YA, Contemporary, Paranormal

Darcy Patel has put college and everything else on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. Arriving in New York with no apartment or friends she wonders whether she's made the right decision until she falls in with a crowd of other seasoned and fledgling writers who take her under their wings…

Told in alternating chapters is Darcy's novel, a suspenseful thriller about Lizzie, a teen who slips into the 'Afterworld' to survive a terrorist attack. But the Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead and as Lizzie drifts between our world and that of the Afterworld, she discovers that many unsolved - and terrifying - stories need to be reconciled. And when a new threat resurfaces, Lizzie learns her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she loves and cares about most.

My Review

Teenage authors, terrorist attacks, and reimagined Indian religions? Sounds like the start of a bad joke. But in the case of Scott Westerfeld’s Afterworlds, the joke wasn’t actually too bad. Of course it wasn’t amazing either.

We start off with Darcy, a recently graduated from high school, almost published author who wants to move to the Big Apple. Her experience is cute, and contemporary, and oh-so-sweet. THEN, we move on to Lizzie. Lizzie’s just survived a terrorist attack at an airport by channeling her inner dog—in other words, she played dead. And now, Lizzie can see dead people. Of course, her entire life is being manipulated by the previously mentioned almost published author. Aww snap!

The dual point of view was unique and fun. It was weird, in a good way, to go from a realistic story of a teenage girl in NYC, to a teenage girl running around with ghosts on her heels. Sadly, Darcy’s story is much more believable, and that’s not just because Lizzie lives with ghosts and Indian spirits running amok. Instead it’s because Darcy has such real emotions. She’s curious and fretful and reminiscent of every teenager who is out on their own for the first time. Whereas the “afterworld” and its protagonist, and even antagonists, left a lot of character and relationship development to be desired. And I just want to say that I'm in love with the idea of Yamaraj's character, not so much how he was actually written.

Plus, for a book that sold for $150,000 to a publishing house,—like Darcy’s book Afterworlds (Not the book I’m writing a review on, but the book Darcy actually wrote that’s narrated by Lizzie. I know, the similar titles are confusing aren’t they?)— it better be a danged good book. The pretend Afterworlds just wasn’t $150,000-level good.

Incidentally, Scott Westerfeld did a marvelous job of showing how unglamorous the publishing industry can sometimes be. I also heard he based a lot of his characters off of his famous author friends. *cough* John Green *cough* The big book Afterworlds (a.k.a. not the one written by Darcy) is a fantastic learning experience when it comes to the writing world. However, I failed to see the oh-my-gosh-I-love-Westerfeld’s-writing appeal. It was good, not squeal-worthy.

*Note: I received a copy of this book to review from Book Review Board of Missouri. This in no way altered my opinion/review.

Which Team Are You? : The Summer I Turned Pretty Series by Jenny Han

I basically just post a book series every week and have people vote on what team they are. I know the YA Sisterhood does the YA Crush Tournament, but I just want to find out how much you guys like one love interest over another, in one series.

Last week's poll was over Team Stefan or Team Damon from L.J. Smith’s The Vampire Diaries series. Team Damon won!

So for this edition of “What Team Are You?” I’m going to ask you who your pick of hunky man-flesh is from The Summer I Turned Pretty series by Jenny Han.

You can choose from:

1)      Jeremiah

or 2) Conrad

I’m Team Conrad basically because he’s a) misunderstood, b) older than Jeremiah, c) kind of a bad boy?, and d) hot! If you had to choose one, who would it be, and why? If you haven’t read the books that are out right now (And why haven’t you?), who do you think sounds more appealing from the The Summer I Turned Pretty summary below.

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer--they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one terrible and wonderful summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

A Book I'm Thankful For: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Once a week, in the month of November, I’m going to share a book that I’m thankful for. Today’s book is one that I’m sure a lot of people are thankful for. And it is…

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
(Harry Potter #1)
Publication Date: October 7, 2014
Hardcover, 310 pages, Scholastic
Genres: Fantasy, YA/MG

Harry Potter has never played a sport while flying on a broomstick. He's never worn a Cloak of Invisibility, befriended a giant, or helped hatch a dragon. All Harry knows is a miserable life with the Dursleys, his horrible aunt and uncle, and their abominable son, Dudley. Harry's room is a tiny cupboard under the stairs, and he hasn't had a birthday party in ten years.

But all that is about to change when a mysterious letter arrives by owl messenger: a letter with an invitation to a wonderful place he never dreamed existed. There he finds not only friends, aerial sports, and magic around every corner, but a great destiny that's been waiting for him... if Harry can survive the encounter.

My Thoughts

This book and its sequels will always have a place in my heart. And as cheesy as that sounds, you know it’s probably true for you, or at least someone you know, too. I read these books when I was a youngling (because I’m so old now, right?) and I can’t believe that I used to have to wait for each book to come out. Without Harry Potter, I’m sure my reading life wouldn’t be nearly as exciting.

What book are you thankful for this Thursday?
