The year is almost halfway over. Ugh. It's going by too fast! And now it's summer and there are bugs! Yuck! Can we just skip to fall instead? May wasn't a particularly exciting month. I mostly worked, worked out, ate, slept, you know, the usual. I did have to battle with some ants, though. They're getting in my house near my book room, and that is unacceptable. I've also had some back and hip pain, so I'm a bit miserable physically. Nothing unbearable, but it's inconvenient. I'm attempting to get that fixed, though. We shall see.
In this wrap-up,
I’ll list the books I read, the books I reviewed, the books I bought/received,
and my TBR for next month. Now, let’s get this bookish party started!
Books Read in May
I read nine books in May, which is the most I've read in a single month this entire year. Huzzah! You can definitely tell that my love of reading has come back. Thank goodness. I read four physical books and five ebooks this month, though technically, one of the ebooks overlaps as a physical book, since I do own a physical copy. I just read it on Kindle Unlimited because that was easier than holding the heavy special edition. That book was A Crown This Cold & Heavy by Stacia Stark, ironically enough. The other physical books include The Bones Beneath My Skin by TJ Klune, Faebound and Cursebound by Saara El-Arifi, and The Emperor and the Endless Palace by Justinian Huang. The ebooks included a NetGalley ARC of Silvercloak by L.K. Steven, Forged in Blood by Sadie Kincaid, and Hate and Liar by Tate James. I read those last three ebooks to see if I liked the books before purchasing special editions that are/were on sale. I didn't enjoy them enough to get special editions, unfortunately. Or fortunately for my bank account.
Books Bought/Received in May
Lots of preorders arrived in May, so this is bad news for my resolution to read as many books as I bring in unread books. I'm now like 14 books behind. Sigh. Overall, though, I bought 23 books in May, and I received 18 books.
The 18 books I received in May that I didn't pay for in the month consisted primarily of preorders that arrived. I did have one Orbit ARC arrive, though. It was The Jasad Crown by Sara Hashem. The preorders included mostly FairyLoot books, with the exception of my Bonds That Tie 1-3 paperback PR editions from J. Bree. There were a total of 14 FairyLoot editions that arrived in May. Isn't that nuts?! Those included The Ragpicker King by Cassandra Clare, The Shadow Bride by Shelby Mahurin, The Wind Weaver by Julie Johnson (April's Adult sub book), This Monster of Mine by Shalini Abeysakara, (April's Romantasy sub book), books 1-4 of the Fate & Flame series by K.A. Tucker, books 1-3 of the Gods & Monsters series by Amber V. Nicole, and books 1, 1.5, and 2 of the Powerless series by Lauren Roberts.
Now, for what I bought. I only received 17 of the 23 books I purchased. Those included five B&N preorders: Cursed Fates by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti, Beautiful Venom by Rina Kent, Silver Elite by Dani Francis, The Knight and the Moth by Rachel Gillig B&N edition, and Beneath the Burning Sea by Amanda Bouchet. It also included my FairyLoot Adult book, The Knight and the Moth, and my Romantasy book, Broken Souls and Bones, by L.J. Andrews. I ordered another copy of The Knight and the Moth from The Novel Neighbor for their signing event, and I ordered the French edition of A Fire in the Flesh from FNAC. From Amazon, I ordered the first three books in the Blackrose Brotherhood series as well as a hardcover of A Shadow in the Ember. I also traded for the Ukraine Manor dust jacket edition of From Blood and Ash and the Books Know No Age dust jackets for FBAA 1-3.
As for the remaining six preordered books I spent money on in the month of May, those included the most expensive books, unfortunately. I purchased the Kings of Quarantine author special editions for a lot of money. Ugh. But, they're very pretty in the mock-ups. I also haven't received my May Epic FairyLoot book yet. Oh, and I preordered a signed copy of The Primal of Blood and Bone from Doylestown for the signing swag.
I went to the theater for the first time in like 10 months. My dad and I saw Thunderbolts*. It was fun. It actually has me excited for upcoming MCU films again. I was really unsure about the direction of the MCU there for a while. I still am, honestly, but at least this film was good. Maybe it'll just be a one-good-film-every-few-years kind of thing. I'm still watching Home Improvement while I eat, but other than that, I'm not watching much of anything. I did end up watching a couple of movies while I was visiting my parents, though. Those included the new Mufasa movie and The Marvels on Disney+, as well as The Lost Boys: The Tribe. We also re-watched The Jungle Book live-action recently. None of the movies were particularly great. The Marvels was actually awful.
June TBR
I did really well with my TBR last month. Now, all I need to read and review in the next few weeks is Arcana Academy by Elise Kova (NetGalley ARC), The Jasad Crown, and The Two Lies of Faven Sythe by Megan E. O'Keefe. I would also like to read The Hemlock Queen by Hannah Whitten and The Night Ends with Fire by K.X. Song since the sequels are going on sale for FairyLoot pretty soon and I'm trying this revolutionary thing where I actually read the first book before buying sequels. I'm currently reading Nectar of the Wicked by Ella Fields for the exact same reason. For my own personal enjoyment, I would like to read The Shadow Bride by Shelby Mahurin, since I just finished the first book in the duology, and I need to read Beneath the Burning Sea by Amanda Bouchet for book club (not pictured).
