Review: Brave by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Brave
(A Wicked Trilogy #3)
Publication Date: December 11, 2017
Paperback, 364 pages
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

Ivy Morgan hasn't been feeling like herself lately. Not like anyone can blame her. After all, being held captive by a psychotic fae prince hell-bent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld is bound to leave some mental scars.

It’s more than that, though. Something dark and insidious is spreading throughout Ivy, more powerful than she could ever imagine... and it’s coming between her and the man she’s fallen deeply in love with, elite Order member Ren Owens.

Ren would do anything to keep Ivy safe. Anything. But when he makes a life altering choice for her, the fallout of his act has far reaching consequences that threaten to tear their lives apart.

If Ivy is going to have any hope of surviving this, she must put aside the hurt and betrayal she feels, and work with not only those she loves, but with an enemy she would rather kill than ever trust. War is coming, and it soon becomes clear that what Ivy and Ren thought they knew about the Order, themselves, and even their enemies, has been nothing but a cluster of dangerous, deadly lies.

Ivy knows she must be more than just brave to save those she loves--and, ultimately, to save herself.

Because behind every evil fae Prince, there’s a Queen….

My Review

The final book in JLA’s Wicked Trilogy picks up pretty close to where Torn left off. Ivy’s reeling from all that’s happened, and her friends are just as worried as she is. There’s so much angst. Something I feel like JLA does a very good job creating.

For a finale, Brave had it all: action, kissing, death, betrayal, and more. I do wish, however, that it had been another 100 pages longer. I think it could have done with being slowed down towards the end. Though I’ve noticed JLA’s final books for her series always tend to really amp up the speed. It didn’t necessarily detract from the story as I was reading, but reflecting on the ending later on, I think more pages would have prevented some rushed scenes.

One thing I LOVED about this ending, however, was Ivy’s growth. I’m not going to spoil it, but let’s just say the end of book two and the beginning of book three left her in a bad place. Her metamorphosis was so cool though. It’s what made me love this installment more than book two, and Ren’s reaction to Ivy’s change gave me all the heart flutters. He’s less alpha-male possessive-macho-man than JLA’s previous love interests. That’s not to say he doesn’t have some of those qualities, but he does trust Ivy to take care of herself.

As for the side characters, Tink had some very funny scenes. I’m still not sure exactly how I feel about his “growth.” I liked him a little better the way he was in the first book. I kind of felt the same about the villain of the story. He was more ominous in books one and two, and the twist in this ending left me unsure. Plus, I was a little shocked by how JLA chose to write the ending. It was so different from her other series.

All in all, I’m sad the trilogy is complete. I want more Ren. More Ivy. And more Tink. I think I’m entitled to another three books, right? Well, at least there might be a TV adaptation to get me through my book hangover....

Can't-Wait Wednesday: By Force Alone by Lavie Tidhar

"Can’t-Wait Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted over at Wishful Endings, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, what's really got my pages in a twist is...

By Force Alone
Publication Date: June 16, 2020
Hardcover, 416 pages, Tor Books
Genres: Adult, Historical Fiction, Retelling

A retelling of Arthurian myth for the age of Brexit and Trump, from World Fantasy Award-winner Lavie Tidhar, By Force Alone.

Everyone thinks they know the story of King Arthur and his knights of the Round Table.

The fact is they don't know sh*t.

Arthur? An over-promoted gangster.
Merlin? An eldritch parasite.
Excalibur? A shady deal with a watery arms dealer.
Britain? A clogged sewer that Rome abandoned just as soon as it could.

A savage and cutting epic fantasy, equally poetic and profane, By Force Alone is at once a timely political satire, a magical adventure, and a subversive masterwork.

My Thoughts

I’ve heard really good things about this book, which is great, because I need a good Arthurian retelling in my life. I miss Merlin, Arthur, and the gang. I’ve even thought about re-watching the Merlin TV show, even though I know the ending just makes me sad. Plus, By Force Alone is supposed to make the story gritty and dark. And I just want it ASAP.

What book are you waiting for this Wednesday?

Review: Torn by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Torn
(A Wicked Trilogy #2)
Publication Date: July 19, 2016
Paperback, 360 pages
Genres: New Adult, Paranormal, Urban Fantasy

Torn between duty and survival, nothing can be the same.

Everything Ivy Morgan thought she knew has been turned on its head. After being betrayed and then nearly killed by the Prince of the Fae, she’s left bruised and devastated—and with an earth-shattering secret that she must keep at all costs. And if the Order finds out her secret, they’ll kill her.

Then there’s Ren Owens, the sexy, tattooed Elite member of the Order who has been sharing Ivy’s bed and claiming her heart. Their chemistry is smoking hot, but Ivy knows that Ren has always valued his duty to the Order above all else—he could never touch her if he knew the truth. That is, if he let her live at all. Yet how can she live with herself if she lies to him?

But as the Fae Prince begins to close in, intent on permanently opening the gates to the Otherworld, Ivy is running out of options. If she doesn’t figure out who she can trust—and fast—it’s not only her heart that will be torn apart, but civilization itself.

My Review

I put off reading this book for so very long, and I truly don’t know why. JLA knows how to write urban fantasy, whether new adult or young adult. The worlds she creates are always unique, and the romances are always fascinating. Also, this review contains MINOR SPOILERS, so read at your own risk.

For this series in particular, I read the first book when it was released, but the sequels got lost in the kerfuffle of all the book releases. I can’t believe I forgot how much I adored Ren, Tink, and Ivy, though. They’re such a fun bunch. However, in this addition to the trilogy, things are a little more serious. The Fae Prince is on the loose, and Ivy has secrets to uncover.

Unfortunately, this book wasn’t my favorite of the trilogy. Torn had that trope of the female protagonist being captured, which has become a “thing” for YA and semi-new adult books like Sarah J. Maas’s A Court of Thorns and Roses and Throne of Glass as well as Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen series. It’s just kind of slow and sloggy during those scenes, when you’d rather have some action, or, in my case, more Ivy + Ren scenes.

JLA did a great job of creating a world where you aren’t sure which side is good and which is bad, and you can definitely feel Ivy’s pain when it comes to figuring out what the heck is going on. And even though this middle book wasn’t my favorite in the trilogy, it was still the one I devoured the fastest. I just had to know what was going to happen next.

All in all, JLA does it once again. She’s given us a paranormal series that has it all: good romance, a conflicted heroine, tiny creatures, and attractive bad guys. A definite must-read if any of those things interest you.

Review: Storm & Fury by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Storm & Fury
(The Harbinger #1)
Publication Date: June 11, 2019
Hardcover, 512 pages, Inkyard Press
Genres: Young Adult, Paranormal

Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow may be going blind, but she can see and communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her unique gift is part of a secret so dangerous that she’s been in hiding for years in an isolated compound fiercely guarded by Wardens—gargoyle shape-shifters who protect humankind from demons. If the demons discover the truth about Trinity, they’ll devour her, flesh and bone, to enhance their own powers.

When Wardens from another clan arrive with disturbing reports that something out there is killing both demons and Wardens, Trinity’s safe world implodes. Not the least because one of the outsiders is the most annoying and fascinating person she’s ever met. Zayne has secrets of his own that will upend her world yet again—but working together becomes imperative once demons breach the compound and Trinity’s secret comes to light. To save her family and maybe the world, she’ll have to put her trust in Zayne. But all bets are off as a supernatural war is unleashed…

My Review

Thank you JLA for getting me out of the Great Reading Slump of 2019! This book was my first read of 2020, and so far, it’s my favorite read of the year. It also started my catch-up on all of the JLA books I’ve been stupidly putting off for way too long.

With this book, we’re back in the world of Wardens and demons, and I am HERE. FOR. IT. Honestly, it’s such a joy to immerse myself in this JLA creation. The aesthetic of this world is so fascinating. It’s a mix of the Disney cartoon Gargoyles with the sexiness of early Supernatural.

As always, JLA’s writing is so easy to follow and her characters are amazing. I don’t know how she manages to make all of her characters unique when she writes so many books, but somehow she does it. It’s mind-boggling. Our female main character, Trinity is actually in a pretty similar situation as most of JLA’s main characters—in that she’s a special girl who is kept secret for reasons—but unlike Alex from the Covenant series or Evie from the Origin trilogy, Trinity knows that she’s special. I think this, along with her limited eyesight and general badassery, makes for a pretty cool MC.

Now, I have to admit that I wasn’t the biggest fan of Zayne in The Dark Elements trilogy. Unfortunately for him, he just got in the way of one of my favorite ships. (Roth + Layla 4eva!) In this book, though, he was great. I think he complemented Trinity well. Selfishly, I do have to take away half a star because I wanted more Roth and Layla scenes, and just Roth being a badass in general. However, he was fantastic in the scenes he did appear in, and I am unbelievably excited to potentially see more of him in book two.

All in all, Storm & Fury is a quick, action-packed paranormal read with a surprise ending and a great romance. I was super excited to dive back into this gargoyle world, and I can’t wait for the sequel!

My Most Anticipated Releases of 2020

The title says it all! It’s time for me to list my most anticipated releases of 2020. Yes, I realize 2020 is already four months underway. I’m just behind. So very behind. But now I have the time to catch up. Yay!

Because I’m a little late, I do have one most anticipated book that won’t be on this list, as it’s already out. That is House of Blood and Earth by Sarah J. Maas. SJM’s books aren’t usually in my most-anticipated lists, but I’ve really been into new adult urban fantasy lately. I think it’s because I want to write my own, and SJM’s books always inspire so many ideas. I haven’t read HoBaE yet, as I’m waiting as long as I can possibly stand so that the sequel release date will be closer.

Now, onto the rest of the list! And just fyi, none of these releases are in any particular order. I couldn’t decide between which ones I coveted more.

House of Dragons
(House of Dragons #1)
Publication Date: May 12, 2017
Hardcover, 448 pages, Random House
Genres: YA, Fantasy

Five royal houses will hear the call to compete in the Trial for the dragon throne. A liar, a soldier, a servant, a thief, and a murderer will answer it. Who will win?

When the Emperor dies, the five royal houses of Etrusia attend the Call, where one of their own will be selected to compete for the throne. It is always the oldest child, the one who has been preparing for years to compete in the Trial. But this year is different. This year, these five outcasts will answer the call....

THE LIAR: Emilia must hide her dark magic or be put to death.

THE SOLDIER: Lucian is a warrior who has sworn to never lift a sword again.

THE SERVANT: Vespir is a dragon trainer whose skills alone will keep her in the game.

THE THIEF: Ajax knows that nothing is free--he must take what he wants.

THE MURDERER: Hyperia was born to rule and will stop at nothing to take her throne.

My Thoughts

I miss Daenerys Targaryen. And Jon Snow. And just Game of Thrones in general. Season eight was an epic letdown, but the world aesthetic was still absolutely amazing, and I’m hoping this book can capture just half of GoT’s magnificence. (Note: I haven’t read the A Song of Ice and Fire books yet. I’m working on it.)

I just hope this series has cool characters and dragons. Is that too much to ask for? I don’t think so.

Reign
(Stormheart #3)
Publication Date: August 20, 2020
Hardcover, 432 pages, Tor Teen
Genres: YA, Fantasy

FIRST SHE ROARED. THEN SHE RAGED. NOW IT'S TIME FOR HER REIGN.

Aurora Pavan wanted to change her world.

She wanted to protect her people, not because they paid taxes, but because they deserved to live without fear. She wanted Pavan to be a home that welcomed everyone--remnants, stormhunters, and witches included.

For the first time in her life, she did not dread the duty into which she was born. She wanted it.

Then she met him. The Stormlord--the man who wielded the same magic as she, but with the intent to destroy rather than save. The Aurora Pavan who came home from that confrontation was not the same girl that had braved the wildlands and joined a rebellion. She was no longer the girl who was ready to change the world, ready to rule.

But she's the queen now all the same. And her kingdom needs her.

If only she can keep the new darkness inside her at bay.

My Thoughts

I feel like I read Roar so very long ago, and I haven’t picked up Rage yet. I’m planning on re-reading the first book and then bingeing books two and three right after. It’s going to be a glorious, fantasy-filled adventure. I love the aesthetic of this YA trilogy, so I can’t wait to see what Cora’s done with the world in these last two installments. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the covers are gorgeous.

Chosen Ones
(The Chosen Ones #1)
Publication Date: April 7, 2020
Hardcover, 432 pages, John Joseph Adams
Genres: Adult, Fantasy

A decade ago near Chicago, five teenagers defeated the otherworldly enemy known as the Dark One, whose reign of terror brought widespread destruction and death. The seemingly un-extraordinary teens—Sloane, Matt, Ines, Albie, and Esther—had been brought together by a clandestine government agency because one of them was fated to be the “Chosen One,” prophesized to save the world. With the goal achieved, humankind celebrated the victors and began to mourn their lost loved ones.

Ten years later, though the champions remain celebrities, the world has moved forward and a whole, younger generation doesn’t seem to recall the days of endless fear. But Sloane remembers. It’s impossible for her to forget when the paparazzi haunt her every step just as the Dark One still haunts her dreams. Unlike everyone else, she hasn’t moved on; she’s adrift—no direction, no goals, no purpose. On the eve of the Ten Year Celebration of Peace, a new trauma hits the Chosen: the death of one of their own. And when they gather for the funeral at the enshrined site of their triumph, they discover to their horror that the Dark One’s reign never really ended..

My Thoughts

I’m cheating a little bit, since Chosen Ones already came out this week. However, I haven’t bought it yet, so it counts, right? (I’m holding off on buying more books until I’ve read more of the ones I already own. I'm trying to knock out some of TBR books during this lockdown situation.)

I’ve actually heard a lot of mixed things about this one, so I’m nervous. I just thought the concept sounded so cool and unique. Following YA heroes after they’ve fulfilled their destiny to see how messed up their lives are as adults is fascinating to me.

A Sky Beyond the Storm
(An Ember in the Ashes #4)
Publication Date: December 1, 2020
Hardcover, 464 pages, Penguin Random House
Genres: YA, Fantasy

Picking up just a few months after A Reaper at the Gates left off...

The long-imprisoned jinn are on the attack, wreaking bloody havoc in villages and cities alike. But for the Nightbringer, vengeance on his human foes is just the beginning.

At his side, Commandant Keris Veturia declares herself Empress, and calls for the heads of any and all who defy her rule. At the top of the list? The Blood Shrike and her remaining family.

Laia of Serra, now allied with the Blood Shrike, struggles to recover from the loss of the two people most important to her. Determined to stop the approaching apocalypse, she throws herself into the destruction of the Nightbringer. In the process, she awakens an ancient power that could lead her to victory--or to an unimaginable doom.

And deep in the Waiting Place, the Soul Catcher seeks only to forget the life--and love--he left behind. Yet doing so means ignoring the trail of murder left by the Nightbringer and his jinn. To uphold his oath and protect the human world from the supernatural, the Soul Catcher must look beyond the borders of his own land. He must take on a mission that could save--or destroy--all that he knows.

My Thoughts

I have to admit, I haven’t read An Ember in the Ashes yet. I’m super glad that I held off, though, since Sabaa has taken longer than average to get her sequels out. It’s totally fine. I actually wish more authors were allowed to take an extra bit of time to get their books right rather than rush their writing, but I knew the wait would be brutal on my nerves. I’m so happy that I’ll be able to binge-read the series at the end of this year. I’m hoping to get a nice boxset of all four hardcovers with the new cover designs too.

Rage & Ruin
(The Harbinger #2)
Publication Date: May 16, 2020
Hardcover, 576 pages, Inkyard Pres
Genres: YA, Paranormal

Half-angel Trinity and her bonded gargoyle protector, Zayne, have been working with demons to stop the apocalypse while avoiding falling in love. The Harbinger is coming…but who or what is it? All of humankind may fall if Trinity and Zayne can’t win the race against time as dark forces gather.

As tensions rise, they must stay close together and patrol the DC streets at night, seeking signs of the Harbinger, an entity that is killing Wardens and demons with no seeming rhyme or reason. Forbidden to be with each other, Zayne and Trinity fight their feelings and turn to unusual sources for help—the demon Roth and his cohorts. But as deaths pile up and they uncover a sinister plot involving the local high school and endangering someone dear to Zayne, Trin realizes she is being led…herded…played for some unknown end. As anger builds and feelings spiral out of control, it becomes clear that rage may be the ruin of them all.

My Thoughts

Okay, I lied. One of the books on this list can be ranked. Rage & Ruin is my most anticipated book of 2020. I neeeeeed it. I finished Storm & Fury in January, and it was everything I’d hoped for. It got me out of a reading slump and forced me to pick up every JLA book I had been putting off for God-knows-what-reason. But yeah, I’m just excited to read about Trinity and Zayne’s next adventures. And hopefully there’ll be more Roth. ;)
