Camp NaNoWriMo Update #2

It’s time for my second update of Camp NaNoWriMo. And guess what? There’s not a whole lot to update you on.

I’ve kind of fizzled out on my writing lately. See, the thing is, I’m a genre writer, and not a genre writer in terms of I only write in one genre. I’m a genre writer in terms of, if I’m reading/watching something in a particular genre, that’s what sparks my interest in writing a story in that particular topic. For instance, I was reading a lot of YA fantasy for a while and watching the second season of The Shannara Chronicles, so those stories sparked ideas for my current work in progress.

Now unfortunately, I’m not into the fantasy genre. I don’t mean that I’ll never pick up a fantasy book again, I just mean that, as of this moment, I’m really into paranormal/urban fantasy stuff. Why? Well, because I’ve been obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Can you see why this would be a problem for someone who is trying to write a YA fantasy story with no magic?

Because of this setback, I haven’t written anything since the first day of Camp. I wrote over 600 words that night, but I don’t think I’ll write any more. At least not during this month. I’m just not into the genre right now. Maybe, if I pick up a fantasy book soon, I’ll be able to get a few more hundred words out by April 30, but I just don’t think it’ll happen. I’ve had a lot going in the past few weeks, and there’s more to come. So, I think I’m going to let the prospect of writing this particular novel sit for a while.

That being said, I have had some inspiration for a new story. It’s an adult paranormal series with multiple characters, but it really focuses on one main couple. I haven’t started writing anything. I’ve just jotted down some character notes and plot points, but I’m excited about the prospect of it. And, I may never finish this story either, but it’s fun to think of the possibilities.

Well, that’s my Camp NaNoWriMo update. I don’t think I’ll be doing any more of these posts for the rest of the month, unless I just have a major breakthrough at some point. We shall see…

Camp NaNoWriMo Update #1

Alright everyone. I finally did it. I signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo with the intention of actually going through with it.

What does that mean, exactly? Well, it means I’ve signed up for Camp NaNoWriMo once before and did absolutely nothing. I did the same thing this November with regular NaNoWriMo. I just wasn’t feeling it then.

Now, however, I will participate. I already have 7,000 words in my story so far, so I’m hoping it won’t be too difficult to keep going. I’m only making myself hit 15,000 words in April for a totally of 23,000 words by the end of the month. There’s no way I could do 50,000. I’m really glad the Camp version allows its participants to choose their own word-count goal. Otherwise, I think it would be a bust for me.

My roommate on the other hand, she’s going for the full 50,000. But then again, she doesn’t go to the gym like I do or blog post as much. I’m hoping that we can keep each other on track for the month, though. I only have to get 500 words per day.

That daily goal would be even lower if I was able to use the full month. Unfortunately for Camp purposes, I’m flying back to Missouri on April 28. That means four days without writing, because I’ll be packing on April 27 and with family the other three days. But it should work out. I can hit 1,000+ words on the weekends, so if I must, I’ll hit it strong then, and let the weekdays suffer a bit.

As for my story itself, it’s a new adult fantasy set in a non-magical fantasy world. It has cute boys; an angsty, slow-burn romance; and a ton of betrayal.

To keep myself pepped up about my writing process, I thought that, every Monday, I’d post an update on my writing. I may even throw in a sneak peek or two of my Pinterest board.😉

A Pinterest sneak peek

The blog post will cover my writing progress from Saturday to Saturday, so I haven’t started Camp as I’m writing up this post. Tomorrow, April 1, will be the big day. I’m trying to knock out all of this week’s blogging today, just so I don’t have to worry about it until next Saturday. And while I really don’t want the blog to suffer, I might try to prioritize Camp NaNoWriMo over posting. Eek.

Well, that’s all I have for this post. Anyone else participating in Camp NaNoWriMo this year? Have you participated before? Do you have any advice? Let me know in the comments!
