Happy Valentine’s Day, everyone!

Hopefully you all are snuggling up with some great book boyfriends/girlfriends tonight.

Also, eat some chocolate for me, would you?

New York Trip Recap (Day 1)

Hallelujah! I have finally managed to write my recap of what happened on my trip to New York back in January. January! It’s been longer than a month since I actually went on this trip, but I’m just now getting to blogging about it. Once again, let me reiterate that grad school is a time sucker.

I’m going to break this recap up into four separate posts based on the four days (technically five if you count the flight back) I was in NYC.

Okay, so if you don’t know the gist of it, I went to New York with my older sister in early January to talk to New York University’s faculty for the Summer Publishing Institute as well as meet with editors at Simon & Schuster. I also went to simply get the feel of New York City and decide whether or not I wanted to move there after I finally graduate. (Spoiler alert: I really want to, so I can work in publishing.)

A view outside the plane window before takeoff.

To begin with, I have to admit that this was my first plane trip. Yep, I’m 23 years old, and the first time I had ever been on a plane was a month ago. Crazy, right? Basically, this meant I was super unprepared for everything, so that’s why my sister was coming with me. She’d been to New York before and she’d traveled on planes, so she was my travel guru. Of course, this didn’t mean we didn’t take some wrong turns every once in a while. (Airports are insane.)

Speaking of airports, the first time I ever flew, I got pat down by the TSA. Not even just pat down. They actually checked my hands for some sort of residue stuff. Ugh. And, no, they didn’t find anything. I’m not that kind of girl. Unsurprisingly, my sister was super amused by all of this.

After that, we got on our two-hour flight from Chicago to New York. And, I have to admit, it was perfectly fine. I very much enjoyed my experience on the way there. (The way back was a totally different story.)

The view right outside of our hotel room. We were on the 32nd floor.

Once we got to New York, we got a cab to our hotel: the Millennium Broadway Hotel. (My first cab ride!) I will never drive in New York if I live there. Public transportation and my own two feet will be my methods of getting around. That traffic is nuts!

The view outside the opposite end of our motel.

Our hotel was right off of Times Square, but we didn’t take any time to explore right away. Instead, we took a few pictures outside our window and promptly decided to take a nap with SpongeBob playing in the background. We’re such go-getters. In our defense, we’d gotten up super early after staying up late to get to the airport on time.

Me standing outside of our hotel with Times Square in the background.

After our naps, we decided to explore even though it was drizzling outside. Once we stepped out into Times Square, though, we were kind of overwhelmed. It was raining and people were moving so quickly, but we were on a mission to find food. We ended up eating at a place right across from our hotel, Virgil’s BBQ. (My sister joked that you can take the girl out of the south, but you can’t take the south out of the girl.)

Virgil BBQ's cuisine. A pulled chicken sandwich with fries for me, and mac & cheese and something else for my sister. I don't remember what she got...

We also found a deli across the street from our hotel that affectionately become “our deli,” as we bought water, breakfast muffins, and snacks from that place daily.

And that pretty much concludes day one. The plane trip and our nap took up a majority of the daylight hours. Plus, it wasn’t the most pleasant outside, so we decided a night in to recoup wouldn’t be a terrible thing. Day two, however, was an entirely different story. Stay tuned for that mess of an adventure.

Stacking the Shelves: The Haul Traded for with the Unhaul Edition

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly haul meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It allows book buyers to share their accumulation of books with the online book-loving community.

I went to the used bookstore again to trade in some of those books I unhauled a while ago. I've already read two of them; I just needed my own copies. ;)

The Darkest Torment by Gena Showalter
The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward
The Warrior Heir by Cinda Williams Chima

There were a lot of books I wanted to get, but I’ve been kind of picky lately on what I pick up. I guess it’s because I know I’ll have to move the new ones to my new place at the end of this semester. Yuck.

What books have you bought/received lately?

Dean Winchester Friday

Dean Winchester (or sometimes Jensen Ackles) Fridays make me a very happy fangirl. You'll see why when you look at the pic.

Haha. How many of you know what’s happening here?

Hint: A certain The Walking Dead character used to be on Supernatural.

Because I Love the Gallaghers and I Don't Know What I'm Doing With My Life, I'm Gonna Write This Post

I have a ton of other posts I need to write, but I really wanted to talk about Shameless. Mostly because I just finished the last season and I’m freaking out that I have to wait so long for the next season.

http://television.mxdwn.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/08/shameless1-770x470.jpg

You know how Netflix is a college kid’s addiction? Well, imagine being a sick college kid. Then, Netflix becomes the only thing in your seemingly pathetic and miserable life. Or, at least, that was how I felt all last week as I was lying in bed with bronchitis and a viral infection. (Believe me, it’s as gross as it sounds. I still can’t breathe through my nose.)

Anywho, the point of all of this rambling is that I binge watched all seven seasons of Shameless while I was incapacitated. However, I didn’t do it just because I was sick. That show is addicting.

Shameless, in case you don’t know, is about a family of six kids who have a drunk, deadbeat dad. Aka, the Gallaghers. The show takes place in the south side of Chicago, and the older sister, Fiona (Emmy Rossum), takes care of the younger kids. I’ve only seen Emmy Rossum in Phantom of the Opera, so I was surprised whenever I saw her on this show. She’s actually a really great actress.

The premise of the series revolves around the family’s screwed up lifestyle and the gentrification of the south side. There’s constant shenanigans. Some of which are rather mature, so don’t watch this show unless you’re at least sixteen years old.

However, the mature shenanigans aren’t what kept me watching. Instead, I was captivated by the intimate relationships between all of the siblings. Ian and Lip, the two oldest brothers, have an awesome relationship, and Fiona really cares about all of her siblings. Of course, there’s romance in the show as well. (*scoffs* Like I would ever watch and love a show that didn’t have a good romance.)
But I’ll save the details about the love interests for fear of spoilers. Just know that Ian is my favorite Gallagher character. He has a rocky start at first, but by the end of season one, I just shipped him and a certain character very hard.

If this show was in book format, I would scoop up and devour the entire series sooooooo fast because of Ian Gallagher! I don’t just love him, though. All of the characters and seasons are awesome in their own way. Every twist and turn of this show had me immediately clicking for the next episode, and I can’t believe I have to wait months for the eighth season!

https://www.bing.com/images/search?view=detailV2&ccid=9%2bdCRkRy&id=F67A3B95B64E06417C9C756C9AE624B16B0D583D&q=shameless+gif&simid=607995339849140667&selectedIndex=195&ajaxhist=0
All in all, I’d definitely suggest watching this show. It’s gritty, hilarious, charming, and unbelievable, but it’s real and emotional. It’s a great story about family bonds, and it can fill that contemporary gap in between the episodes of sci-fi and fantasy shows that you’re watching.

Waiting on Wednesday: The Wish Granter by C.J. Redwine

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, what's really got my pages in a twist is...

The Wish Granter
(Ravenspire #2)
Publication Date: February 14, 2017
Hardcover, 432 pages, Balzer + Bray
Genres: YA, Fantasy, Fairytale Retelling

The world has turned upside down for Thad and Ari Glavan, the bastard twins of Súndraille’s king. Their mother was murdered. The royal family died mysteriously. And now Thad sits on the throne of a kingdom whose streets are suddenly overrun with violence he can’t stop.

Growing up ignored by the nobility, Ari never wanted to be a proper princess. And when Thad suddenly starts training Ari to take his place, she realizes that her brother’s ascension to the throne wasn’t fate. It was the work of a Wish Granter named Alistair Teague who tricked Thad into wishing away both the safety of his people and his soul in exchange for the crown.

So Ari recruits the help of Thad’s enigmatic new weapons master, Sebastian Vaughn, to teach her how to fight Teague. With secret ties to Teague’s criminal empire, Sebastian might just hold the key to discovering Alistair’s weaknesses, saving Ari’s brother—and herself.

But Teague is ruthless and more than ready to destroy anyone who dares stand in his way—and now he has his sights set on the princess. And if Ari can’t outwit him, she’ll lose Sebastian, her brother…and her soul.

My Thoughts

This one comes out next week! I thought it was going to be out later, sometime in the spring. It’s crazy how fast these book releases are popping up. I’m so behind on buying and reading all of them.

As for The Wish Granter, I read The Shadow Queen last year and thought it was a pretty solid fairytale retelling. That one was about Snow White, and this one’s about Rumpelstiltskin. I’m not a huge fan of Rumple, even on the show Once Upon a Time (he’s okay, but I like Belle more). Hopefully this story surprises me, because I really enjoy Redwine’s writing and her love interests. ;)

What book are you waiting for this Wednesday?

My Thoughts on Doctor Strange

Like yesterday’s post, today’s is a little bit late. Doctor Strange was released last fall, but I’m just now sharing my thoughts on the film. Ugh. #sobehindonlife

In case you know nothing about the film that I’m talking about, go ahead and check out the trailer below.

As for what I thought of the film, I’ll try to make this quick. I’ve heard that this movie got a lot of praise from various critics and the box office, and I’m glad. Unfortunately, I wasn’t as impressed with it as I wanted to be. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it. I just was expecting a little bit more from Disney’s Marvel after seeing Captain America: Civil War.

Okay, I know I shouldn’t compare the two films. Civil War and Doctor Strange are completely different, as one has an already-established cast while the other is vamping a whole new world for us. However, I expected to love Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange a little bit more than I did. He was fun, but I wanted more of a Sherlock vibe from his character, and I think he went in a different direction than that.

I also thought the storyline was a little slow at first. There was a lot of Strange having self-pity and being a total jerkward, but once he got over his slump, I was captivated. Even Tilda Swinton managed to keep me interested. Towards the end, it was a lot like Inception mixed with the magic style of The Magicians (the whole finger and hand movements thing).

I was impressed with the cinematography and the overall magic system, but I think fans might have to separate the Avengers films from Doctor Strange for the time being. At least until the new Thor: Ragnorak movie comes out. I think that movie will open up the magic idea more so Strange connects to the overall established world a little better.

All in all, definitely watch the movie if you’re invested in the Avengers franchise, but don’t expect it to feel like an Avengers film just yet.

Fall 2016 Fierce Reads Signing Event Recap

I went to the Fierce Reads St. Louis signing last fall, and I’m just now getting to writing up my experience. Yikes. Can you tell grad school has made me a little behind in life?

I’m going to try to remember as much as I possibly can since then, but it’s been a few months… I also didn’t record any answers to Q&A panels, so sorry about that.

Anywho, I met Kami Garcia, Marissa Meyer, and Caleb Roehrig for the first time at the signing. I also saw Emma Mills and Leigh Bardugo for the second time. That meant I had less books to get signed from them, which was great because I already had to carry a bajillion for Kami and Marissa.

When I first got to the signing, there was already quite a long line. At least, the line was longer than it had ever been in the past when I had gone to signings at that particular location. I figure it was mostly because of Leigh and Marissa.

During the panel portion of the event, all I can distinctly remember is Kami Garcia and Leigh Bardugo’s amazing banter. They had the entire audience of a hundred or so people laughing so hard they were crying. I was not excluded from those other hundred crying people.

I do kind of remember a conversation about Leigh turning off her phone while she writes and Kami asking Leigh what she does when there’s a “Twitter emergency.” It was funny, but you’d probably have to be there to get it.

Once the hilarious panel was over, everyone went up to get their books signed based on their group number. I decided to not get mine personalized at this event because of something my dad said beforehand about books being worth more if they’re not personalized. I realized he was right, especially if I ever got rid of them or if something ever happened to me. Also, now that I’m getting ready to move, it may be necessary for me to get rid of some of my signed books. *sobs* Let’s hope it doesn’t come to that, though.

First up in the chaotic signing line was Caleb and Emma’s table. They were both ridiculously nice.

Kami was third, and I had way too many books for her to sign. She also showed me that all of my books by her were first editions! Crazy, right? I never knew the 1–10 numbers on the copyright page showed what print cycle the book was on. Thanks for the new info, Kami!

Marissa was my fourth stop. Unfortunately, at the time Heartless hadn’t been released, or I would have picked up a copy.

Leigh was last, and I only had the one book since I’d gotten the others signed the last time I saw her. I also bumped my leg on the table, which jiggled Marissa’s hand while she was signing someone else’s book. (I don’t think she messed up the other person’s book, but it was embarrassing, nonetheless). Leigh warned me that my leg would bruise, and, of course, she was right.

All in all, it was a fun event. I enjoyed it more because I focused less on recording the experience and more on just living in the moment.

Let me know if you have any questions about the event or the authors!

Stacking the Shelves: The Last Semester of Grad School Edition

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly haul meme hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It allows book buyers to share their accumulation of books with the online book-loving community.

I didn’t have any fiction books to share this week, so I thought I’d share some of the textbooks and other nonfiction books I’ve acquired for academic reasons.

The Artful Edit by Susan Bell
Edit Yourself by Bruce Ross-Larson
The Best American Essays (2016) edited by Jonathan Franzen
You Can’t Make This Stuff Up by Lee Gutkind
New Perspectives on Technical Editing edited by Avon J. Murphy
Developmental Editing by Scott Norton
Microsoft Manual of Style
Writing Software Documentation by Thomas T. Barker
The Teacher’s Grammar of English by Ron Cowan

The editing books are for my degree paper, while the other books for my classes. The larger ones are ridiculously annoying to haul across campus.

What books have you bought/received lately?

Waiting on Wednesday: Off the Ice by Julie Cross

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, what's really got my pages in a twist is...

Off the Ice
(Juniper Falls #1)
Publication Date: February 28, 2017
Paperback, 320 pages, Entangled TEEN
Genres: YA/NA, Contemporary

The NY Times and USA TODAY bestselling author of Whatever Life Throws at You kicks off a brand-new series perfect for fans of Miranda Kennealy and Abbi Glines.

All is fair in love and hockey…

Claire O’Connor is back in Juniper Falls, but that doesn’t mean she wants to be. One semester off, that’s what she promised herself. Just long enough to take care of her father and keep the family business—a hockey bar beside the ice rink—afloat. After that, she’s getting the hell out. Again.

Enter Tate Tanley. What happened between them the night before she left town resurfaces the second they lay eyes on each other. But the guy she remembers has been replaced by a total hottie. When Tate is unexpectedly called in to take over for the hockey team’s star goalie, suddenly he’s in the spotlight and on his way to becoming just another egotistical varsity hockey player. And Claire’s sworn off Juniper Falls hockey players for good.

It’s the absolute worst time to fall in love.

For Tate and Claire, hockey isn’t just a game. And they both might not survive a body check to the heart.

My Thoughts

I’m not sure if this book is YA or NA, but either way, it sounds great! I’ve been really into hockey stories lately, and this book’s premise reminds me of The Score by Elle Kennedy. I haven’t finished reading that book, but I really want to at some point in my crazy hectic life. Also, Julie Cross’s Whatever Life Throws at You was a super fun and quick read, so I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this one soon.
