My Thoughts on Mockingjay Part 2

I just finished watching Mockingjay Part 2, so I decided I should write my review. I usually don’t do write reviews right after I watch the film, which usually makes remembering details a lot harder. I should do this more often. We’ll see…

In case you haven’t seen the movie and/or read the book yet, I suggest leaving now. Please. This is for your own sanity. Spoilers are evil.

Mockingjay Part 2 (MP2) starts out right where Part 1 (MP1) left off. However, something’s changed a little with Katniss. She isn’t as “Woe is me,” as she was in the first part. Not to say she was always this way in MP1, I just noticed it a lot as I was watching. In MP2, Katniss sucks it up and starts moving. Or at least, moving more. I think it had to do with the reintroduction of Peeta to the storyline. This helped move the plot along. I know all of this happened in the book, as well, and I hated Katniss’ pity party as I was reading, too, but watching it happen was more painful. I guess because in a movie you expect things to go pretty fast. But, like I said, things picked up in this one.

Jennifer Lawrence did a better job playing Katniss in MP2 than in MP1. I don’t think JLaw was used to Katniss being so pity-party-esque, either, so her acting felt off to me in MP1. In this one, she’s less of a pawn and more of a knight. As for the other actors, Josh Hutcherson—who I love as an actor and a person—is simply not how I picture Peeta. I think I say this every time I review any of the HG movies, but it’s true. I picture someone broader and taller. Someone who can actually pick up heavy weights and throw them around. However, he’s a good actor and he plays his part—crazy mutt/lover—well. Liam Hemsworth did a good job at making me dislike Gale, despite his attractive appearance. I wanted to shake the trigger-happy attitude right out of him.

Oh, and how many people couldn’t separate the MP2 actresses from their Game of Thrones’ roles? I was able to with Cressida/Natalie Dormor, but Commander Lyme/Gwendoline Christie? I could only think of as Brienne of Tarth. It didn’t help that I could hear her accent coming through. I was still happy to see her make her very small appearance, nonetheless.

The other characters, like Haymitch, President Snow, Coin, etc. were about the same as they were in the other movies. I didn’t see a lot of growth or anything, but I was glad they were there, especially Effie.

Moving on to the pace of the movie, I must say that it went a lot faster than MP1 (I’ve already given my suspicions as to why this is). And while 95% of the movie followed the book to the letter, I still don’t like how every time something major happens, Katniss really has no direct role in it. For instance, the actual takedown of Snow. Katniss passes out and BAM! the rebels are in. After all of her friends’ and teammates’ deaths, the rebels just get the job done. It really makes her entire plotline in the Capitol seem pointless. Again, that’s more of a book issue than a movie issue.

The only other thing I can think to talk about is the special effects. The pods, traps, and bombs were all done really well. Nothing was overly BOOMed, if that makes sense. The mutts in the sewers? Those things were freakin’ freaky. I did not picture them so… zombie-like. I pictured the mutts from the first Games. Maybe I missed something in my previous read-through of Mockingjay, but I really don’t remember them being so humanoid. Does anyone else?

So I’ve voiced a few of my complaints, but I must say that this movie is a very good rendition of a good book. Mockingjay isn’t my favorite book of the trilogy (obviously), but MP2 was done very well. I didn’t think I’d get as emotional as I did throughout the movie, so kudos to you, filmmakers and cast, you made me tear up a little. And curse you, Buttercup. Your scene caused me so much mental anguish.

All in all, there’s no reason for you to not go and watch this great finale to a great franchise.

Which Team Are You? : The Wolves of Mercy Falls Edition

I basically just post a book series every week and have people vote on what team they are. I know the YA Sisterhood does the YA Crush Tournament, but I just want to find out how much you guys like one love interest over another, in one series.

Last week's poll was over Team Simon or Team Baz from Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On. Unfortunately, no one voted, so there is no winner. Maybe the book is too recent of a release for me to do a poll just yet. I’ll redo it sometime in the future.

So for this edition of “Which Team Are You?” I’m going to ask you who your pick of hunky man-flesh is from The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvater.

You can choose from:

1) Sam

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=sam+wolves+of+mercy+falls&view=detailv2&&id=C22BED13E8B17953F0009591D3B7DD0DB63DC046&selectedIndex=184&ccid=R8JG02Vq&simid=608054214707447103&thid=OIP.M47c246d3656acf02003461114d85f792o1&ajaxhist=0

or 2) Cole

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=cole+wolves+of+mercy+falls&view=detailv2&&id=48B7B01DB503B453DD4D2A1D9FEC004767A28FD5&selectedIndex=8&ccid=cKwQWcXJ&simid=607994162476223794&thid=OIP.M70ac1059c5c9f441bd160ec895ee1e9eo1&ajaxhist=0

I’m Team Both? I like Sam because he’s sweet and mysterious, but Cole is the bad boy. And I really like bad boys. I’m just going to plead the 5th on this one.
If you had to choose one, who would it be, and why? If you haven’t read the books (How is that even possible!?), who do you think sounds more appealing from the Shiver blurb below (which is highly skewed in Sam's favor. Oops.):

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

Stacking the Shelves: The Used and New Edition

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly haul meme that is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It allows book buyers to share their accumulation of books with the online book-loving community.

I traded some books in at my local used bookstore and I went through the shelves there.

The Return of the King by J.R.R. Tolkien
Pride andPrejudice and Zombies by Jane Austen & Seth Grahame-Smith

Oh, and here’s the pic of Winter I promised you last week. :)

Winter by Marissa Meyer (last week)

I got Pride and Prejudice and Zombies because I really want to see the movie, but I want to read the book first, and I grabbed The Return of the King because I needed this edition to finish my LOTR collection.

What books have you bought/received lately?

I hope you got your pie yesterday and that you have a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Happy Thanksgiving!

No real post today because I’m lazy and it’s a holiday. I’m not really doing anything special for the holiday. I am, however, doing a lot of homework. Yay! (You can't see it, but I’m secretly dying inside.)

Anywho, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!

I hope you get to have many book-ish adventures this weekend.

Waiting on Wednesday: Glass Sword by Victoria Aveyard

"Waiting On Wednesday" is a weekly event, hosted over at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we're eagerly anticipating.

This week, what's really got my pages in a twist is...

Glass Sword
(Red Queen #2)
Publication Date: February 9, 2016
Hardcover, 448 pages, HarperTeen
Genres: YA, Fantasy/Dystopian

The thrilling second book in the #1 New York Times bestselling Red Queen trilogy follows Mare Barrow on her mission to defeat the traitorous Maven.

Mare Barrow’s blood is red—the color of common folk—but her Silver ability, the power to control lightning, has turned her into a weapon that the royal court tries to control.

The crown calls her an impossibility, a fake, but as she makes her escape from Maven, the prince—the friend—who betrayed her, Mare uncovers something startling: she is not the only one of her kind.

Pursued by Maven, now a vindictive king, Mare sets out to find and recruit other Red-and-Silver fighters to join in the struggle against her oppressors.

But Mare finds herself on a deadly path, at risk of becoming exactly the kind of monster she is trying to defeat.

Will she shatter under the weight of the lives that are the cost of rebellion? Or have treachery and betrayal hardened her forever?

The electrifying next installment in the Red Queen series escalates the struggle between the growing rebel army and the blood-segregated world they’ve always known—and pits Mare against the darkness of her own heart.

My Thoughts

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! That is all.

What book are you waiting for this Wednesday?

TV Shows I'm Watching

I’ve been watching a lot of Netflix lately. Because I have a lot of other things to do and procrastinating by watching TV shows is just what a college kid does, right?

I thought I’d share what I’ve been watching, both on Netflix and on television lately.

The Walking Dead

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=walking+dead+season+6+poster&view=detailv2&&id=841F56F9FAF3CBFA6D497370D2BFF5AD84CD68CA&selectedIndex=5&ccid=m6%2fxs3gi&simid=608017097590572367&thid=OIP.M9baff1b3782210b8fc5861b5afce1c5fo0&ajaxhist=0

Okay, who isn’t watching this? And who is furious that Glenn’s fate hasn’t been revealed yet? I don’t care one way or the other, I just want to know what happened! And that episode with Morgan! What rubbish was that?!

*Edit: I just watched the seventh episode of Season 6 and I now know what happened. I'm oddly ambivalent towards the whole thing, though.

Supernatural

I feel like this is an obvious one. My DWFs give it away that I will always watch this show. But anywho, I’m not sure how I feel about Season 11 yet. I like the Darkness aspect, but I haven’t liked how a few of the episodes have played out. “Baby” was a good one, though.

The 100

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=the+100+season+2+images&view=detailv2&&id=72F4D5E8DF4E3C12F7EEEF1527A779C25A4DC09C&selectedIndex=0&ccid=VJxxsjKl&simid=608016784065956611&thid=OIP.M549c71b232a559a3fa20f60ec189340co0&ajaxhist=0

I just binge-watched the entirety of Season 2 in less than three days. Granted that’s only 16 episodes, but I did it, nonetheless. And I’m so mad I have to wait until next year to start Season 3! I thought Season 3 had already started, that’s why I made myself get on Season 2! I love LOVE LOVE everything about this show! Clarke is a bada$$, Bellamy is awesome, and I just want Season 3 to get here already!

I’m actually going to buy the books the TV show is based off of, just because I want to see how different everything is.

The Flash

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=flash+season+1+images&view=detailv2&&id=FD4037565FC69940B63519E4052CA0DEC83197E3&selectedIndex=21&ccid=rsrwuHfq&simid=607990464505644291&thid=OIP.Maecaf0b877ea68b4850e47297ec6f616o0&ajaxhist=0

I finally managed to start The Flash. I’m almost done with Season 1 right now, but I’m enjoying it. There are few plotholes I’m iffy over, like how the locked up bad guys go to the bathroom or get food and how no bad metahuman stuff happened in the nine months Barry was in a coma, but I’m still enjoying it.

Arrow

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=arrow+season+4+image&view=detailv2&&id=4978816BA0600ADD136968CA54795BE07F74AC83&selectedIndex=41&ccid=xjICun1a&simid=608053402953320226&thid=OIP.Mc63202ba7d5a0e9172af7c6cee51d741o0&ajaxhist=0

This one, I’m only watching right now because it’s on right before Supernatural. If it wasn’t, I’d wait until the entire Season 4 was out before watching it. It’s just gotten so “blah” to me. I can’t even really explain why beyond the cheesy acting. There are other reasons, that’s just the first one that comes to mind.

Gotham

https://www.bing.com/images/search?q=gotham+season+1+image&view=detailv2&&id=9301C8B0C3CC8C06A20F12E7A8F99E320D7FA130&selectedIndex=4&ccid=QIzWvqez&simid=608005630031626292&thid=OIP.M408cd6bea7b3660d594fe8f6c9844f97o0&ajaxhist=0

I also finished binge-watching this one. Okay, so I’d actually gotten seven episodes into the first season back when it started, I just never finished it because I was having computer malfunctions. I was also kind of bored with the show. The aura of it is so dark and gritty. I know why. I mean, obviously, it’s a Batman show, but I wasn’t feeling it at the time, so I put it off. I’m glad I did. I definitely appreciate it more now than I would have back then. Although, the ending of Season 1 was a tad unsatisfactory. Find the Waynes’ killer, Gordon! Yeesh!

Those are all of the shows that I’m watching as of this moment. There are quite a few I wish I was watching (The Originals, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Supergirl), but I just don’t have the time. *sigh*

What other shows should I watch? Or are you watching any of these? Sound off in the comments.

Movie Trailer Thoughts: Allegiant (Again)

I thought I’d share my thoughts and feels about the newest Allegiant trailer. I know I did one earlier for the first trailer, but I have more thoughts. In case you haven’t seen the newest trailer, I’ve posted it below:

So I’ve heard a lot of flak from some people about how different the trailer/movie is from the book. They’re even more miffed because Insurgent was completely different, as well. And while I agree that the movie Insurgent did a horrible job with all the CGI, I actually really enjoyed the movie. I enjoyed it way more than I enjoyed the book. You can check out my full review for it here.

If you haven’t gotten the gist yet from my harping on the Insurgent book, I’ll just let you know that I didn’t really like the last two books. Correction: I loathed Allegiant. And it’s not even for the reasons I bet you’re thinking of. My problem with Allegiant was the world explanation. You CAN’T do that, Veronica Roth! It defeats the whole purpose of creating a dystopian book in the first place!

Okay, rant over. Needless to say, I’m glad the movies are taking a new direction. While I think there are some odd plot holes in the trailer (Four is rappelling when he’s supposed to be afraid of heights and his mother looks like she’s maybe four years older than him), I’m excited for the whole Four new tech and new gun scene that’s shown. He’s such a bada$$. The idea that the kids have grown up watching everyone in Chicago is also really interesting. I know that the people in charge watched, but I don’t remember the whole outside world being able to watch. The idea that these kids are enchanted by Four is so freakin’ adorable, though! I would be that creepy 20-year-old doing the same thing if I was there.

I am curious about what the movie is going to do with Peter and Tris’ brother, however. I remember Caleb’s storyline from the book (Duh), but I can’t tell what they’re going to do with it now. I don’t remember Peter’s storyline and his role in the book at all really. I probably should go back and read the books, just so I can tell the differences, but I feel the books and movies are different enough from each other that doing so will just make me even more confused.

All in all, I’m excited to see where they’re going with this. Do I wish this were the last movie in the franchise? Yes. Will I probably be seeing the second part anyway? More than likely, yes. Am I hoping for some radical changes in regards to the ending? You ‘betcha.

Which Team Are You? : The Carry On Edition

I basically just post a book series every week and have people vote on what team they are. I know the YA Sisterhood does the YA Crush Tournament, but I just want to find out how much you guys like one love interest over another, in one series.

Last week's poll was over Team Green Arrow and Team Flash from the TV shows Arrow and The Flash. Team Arrow won!

So for this edition of “Which Team Are You?” I’m going to ask you a kind of different question. I’m going to ask you who your pick of hunky man-flesh is from Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. But see, here’s the thing, these two—as most of you probably know—are together. Romantically. So I’m essentially asking you which one you like better out of the couple.

You can choose from:

1) Simon

or 2) Baz

I’m Team Baz. Baz is the mysterious, Draco Malfoy of Rowell’s Harry Potter-esque story and that makes me like him. A lot. (Oh, and btw, these images do not really depict how Rowell describes Baz and Simon in her book, at least not to me.)
If you had to choose one, who would it be, and why? If you haven’t read the book (How is that even possible!?), who do you think sounds more appealing from the Carry On summary below:

Simon Snow is the worst chosen one who’s ever been chosen.

That’s what his roommate, Baz, says. And Baz might be evil and a vampire and a complete git, but he’s probably right.

Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here—it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.

Carry On is a ghost story, a love story, a mystery and a melodrama. It has just as much kissing and talking as you’d expect from a Rainbow Rowell story—but far, far more monsters.

Stacking the Shelves: The BRB Sale and Winter Edition

"Stacking the Shelves" is a weekly haul meme that is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. It allows book buyers to share their accumulation of books with the online book-loving community.

Books! Cheap books! The Book Review Board of MO had a sale for their 2013-2014 review copies (not ARCs, they don’t get those), so of course I had to stop by. Especially since each book was only $2. I also bought the book that everyone and their mother has probably already bought, too.

Fire with Fire and Ashes to Ashes by Jenny Han & Siobhan Vivian
Raging Star by Moira Young
Afterglow by Karsten Knight
The Retribution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Winter by Marissa Meyer (not pictured)

I finally managed to buy all of the Mara Dyer books, as well as the Jenny Han and Moira Young books. However, I still need to get the paperback edition of Burn for Burn. *sigh* Cover changes. Ugh. Oh, I also got the swag for pre-ordering Winter, but I didn't get the gloves. Boo. I'll take a pic of Winter for next week's StS. Right now, it's at my parents house some 200 miles away. :)

Review: Unspoken by Sarah Rees Brennan

Unspoken
(The Lynburn Legacy #1)
Publication Date: September 10, 2013
Paperback, 434 pages, Random House Books
Genres: YA, Paranormal

Kami Glass loves someone she's never met . . . a boy she's talked to in her head ever since she was born. She didn't spend her childhood silent about her imaginary friend, and is thus a bit of an outsider in the sleepy English town of Sorry-in-the-Vale. Still, she has a best friend, runs the popular school newspaper, and is only occasionally caught talking to herself. Her life is in order, just the way she likes it, despite the voice in her head.

But all that changes when the Lynburns return . . .

My Review

Oh the feels. Kami and Jared are just made for each other. I know it. There’s no way they could not end up together, right, Sarah? Right?

This story is very different from Sarah’s Demon Lexicon trilogy. Unspoken has a lighter air to it and it’s more of a romance than an action-y paranormal page-turner. But that’s totally okay, I really enjoyed it because of this. I’m getting a little tired of this giant plot-based in fantasy and paranormal books. Sometimes I like reading a light, paranormal romance with thought-out characters and good dialog. That’s exactly what this book is.

Kami is a spunky character who knows exactly what she wants in life—a successful high school (secondary school?) newspaper career. Although Kami’s one-liners and light-heartedness are ridiculously cute for the most part, at times, they are a little repetitive and eye-roll-worthy. Don’t get me wrong, she’s a great character, she’s just a little too perky every once in a while.

Now Jared, the American (Did I forget to mention that this book takes place in the U.K.? Well, it does.) bad boy who talks to Kami in her mind, had me drooling. I haven’t read about a good bad boy since I read Gena Showalter’s A Mad Zombie Party. Despite getting his viewpoint sometimes, I still never really knew what he was going to do/say, like the whole punching someone in the face thing. (You’ll see what I mean once you start reading.) The two of them together are just a combination of awkward, ship-worthy, and fantastic!

I must say, though, that the third person point-of-view left me wanting. I really like to get into the character’s heads, and third person with dual povs doesn’t allow that. While the book managed to have me liking the characters, if it was a first-person pov book, I’d probably be loving them.

Learning about the paranormal aspects of the book is a constant surprise. I still don’t know exactly how the rules of their paranormal world work, but you can bet I’ll be finding out in book #2!

All in all, this book is a delightfully fun piece of literature. If you’re in a reading slump, I’d suggest checking this baby out. You’ll be out of that slump quicker than you can say “Breaking and entering.”

*Note: I purchased a copy of this book for myself. This in no way affected my review.
