Partials Review

Partials by Dan Wells

The human race is all but extinct after a war with Partials—engineered
organic beings identical to humans—has decimated the population. Reduced to only
tens of thousands by RM, a weaponized virus to which only a fraction of humanity
is immune, the survivors in North America have huddled together on Long Island
while the Partials have mysteriously retreated. The threat of the Partials is
still imminent, but, worse, no baby has been born immune to RM in more than a
decade. Our time is running out.

Kira, a sixteen-year-old medic-in-training, is on the front lines of this
battle, seeing RM ravage the community while mandatory pregnancy laws

have pushed what's left of humanity to the brink of civil war, and she's not content to stand by and watch. But as she makes a desperate decision to save the last of her race, she will find that the survival of humans and Partials alike rests in her attempts to uncover the connections between them—connections that humanity has forgotten, or perhaps never even knew were there.

My Review:

Partials was different from other dystopian YA books out there. It's a book that would appeal to any gender and wasn't full of mushy romance. (Not that I'm against mushy romance.)

Kira is a strong character. She's smart and serious and doesn't take no for an answer. Her introduction in the book doesn't exactly have you sympathizing with her character, but that's okay, she doesn't need your sympathy. She knows what she believes, she stands up for what she believes and she will make what she wants to happen, happen or she will die trying. Kira leads a completely crazy quest to save everyone she loves and despite some people not believing in her, she refuses to break down.

Some of the secondary characters were easy to read about while others kind of fell a little flat. An easy to read about character included a certain new addition to Kira's group and the not-so-easy included a very friendly friend of Kira's.

If you truly wish to read this book just be prepared that it is LONG. It's about 500 pages and you can tell it. It's not a quick read at all due to the slightly less action-packed scenes. Also at times during this story the dialogue was a bit...different.

The world-building was interesting and I hope Wells will be able to explain more about the Partials and what they are, as well as give us some more insight into their abilities.
